Default Alternator whining loudly

Went off roading this weekend including some deep wading. Had a great time truck did its job well.
The next morning I started it up and it is whining like someone came and installed a supercharger overnight.
I looked under the hood and did not find the supercharger. However, the noise is certainly coming from the alternator. AB has new ones for $499. Um, no. Mine still makes the juice--it is just loud as hell.
Can I rebuild it with new bearings?
Anyone done this?
I want my quiet truck back, school children now point at me as I roll by.

Go power scrub your entire engine including the pullies to get the mud out and you may be OK, other wise go to Rover Connection for the best price.

Water, no cleaner. The pullies will gather dirt after a hard or wet run and may be the issue, if not, time to start shopping around for a replacement.
Beware of the rebuilds, alot of them are bad unless rebuilt by Bosch.

My question is really can I rebuild it myself. I suspect that since it still works, why can't I just disassemble it and fix my howling bearing?
I am hoping someone has done this--and I can get specs on what bearings to buy--or better yet, some help on doing the tear down of it.

Even Reman shops have a hard time rebuilding a Bosch alternator properly. You may get in there and find you need a lot more then bearings.

New alternator went in fine--did the belt while I was pulling it out too. The new (used) alternator is not the bosch, it is the valeo--still Land Rover branded. Is there any difference between the two? My Disco is a 2000, this one came out of a 2002.
