Am i stupid?
am i retarded for actually considering installing an s300 turbocharger and a cold air intake in a 1998 Land Rover discovery?
I would have to get some sort of a programmer for fuel restrictions... maybe larger injectors?

Fuel has always been a problem with these engine when trying to add a turbo. Your compression isn't going to work and you'll run lean and burn your pistons without some serious changes.
Stupid for wanting to and researching it? Hell no!
Stupid for wanting to, researching it and then going ahead with it? Hell yeah!
If you just wanted to do it for an experiment / the fun of it and drive it for a few thousand miles before the engines' FUBAR'd that's another thing entirely.
I have to echo the sentiments above. Turbo is a huge no-way. To supercharge it and do it reliably would require great cost and effort for minimal gains. As they say, horsepower ain't cheap. Still not cheap, but your best bet may be to do a 4.6 transplant or do some intake / exhaust / ignition / cam upgrades on your existing engine.
As an example of the minimal gains to be had by safely supercharging the rover V8, look at the Callaway Range Rover.
Bone Stock '98 4.6 225hp and 280 torques
Callaway '98 4.6 240hp and 285 torques
For a net gain of 15hp and 5 torques what's the point?
Now look at the 2003 4.6 with the THOR plenum instead of the GEMS
217hp and 300 Torques
Now let's look at the stock specs between the 4.0s
1998 Disco 182hp 233 torques
2001 Disco 188hp 250 torques
Net Gain 5hp 12 torques
So, theoretically, and depending on what you're after you'd probably be better off boring out you intake, changing the trumpets and adding a bigger throttle body (which could really be anything from the junk yard for cheap) changing the filter and exhaust and doing a good tune up.
Or for the torque just put a THOR plenum on from the junk yard for $30.
I'd think your gains would actually be better than supercharging for far less money. I'm no expert so please don't take that as gospel. Just throwing out some ideas for discussion.

your probably looking at dished pistons. a beefed up bottom end. stand alone engine management. bigger injectors. TB mods.
then beefing up or replacing the tranny with a different unit
and not to mention the differentials and axles needed upgrading,,,,
can you do it? yes!
but you are looking at $20k to 30k easy in labor and parts

You will have to completely rebuild the inside of the engine from the ground up. It just can't take it. Things will break as soon as you step on the pedal. At least, this is what I have been told. : /
Yes, you're stupid for thinking of dumping more money than the truck is worth into the truck for performance gains that will only shorten the life of the truck. I'm guessing this means you weren't able to sell the truck for $9000 like we told you you wouldn't be able to.
