I know this subject has been beatin to death, but I see a lot of Disco owners using Rotella 15/40 oil. I live in the North East (Maine) Going to do a oil change as soon as it gets above 5 degrees !! Question I ask I see it avail at Advanceed auto store but it says heavy duty diesel oil either T-5 or T-6, is this the stuff I want ???

I'm educating myself on oil also. T6 is full synthetic. T5 is a blend. I am about to switch to T5 15w-40 because it does not get down to 0F here in Texas. Cold start climates, folks go T5 5w-40 usually winter and 15w-40 summer. Also extra capacity filter like Mobil 1- M1-301 or Wix 51515.

I have seen some "heavy duty diesel" stuff. You might consider the $13/gallon Rotella T5 15w-40 from Walmart. Advance auto is like $18/gal. O'reilly had a $13/gal special too.

If you're comfortable with full synthetic, some guys like the T6 5w-40 for cold start climates in winter.

Shell Rotella is available in a variety of types & weights. Many here use T, T5 or T6.

Just a clarification. You're correct that T6 is full synth and T5 is a blend, however you've got the weights a little mixed up.

T6 is full synthetic 5w40.

T5 is synthetic/dino blend 10w30.

Then standard Rotella T (full Dino) is the 15w40.

 

So I am here in the store now and going with Rotella T 15w-40 for $12.97 /gal at Walmart. It says heavy duty diesel but that's ok.

The 12.97 Rotella 15/40w is what I use. I grab 2 jugs vs one 4qt jug and buying two small qt's for nearly 5.00 a piece. Great oil and yeah use a larger PH8A (P/N: for reference as I can't stand FRAM stuff). I prefer the Mobil1 M301, Bosch 3500 (also at walmart), or the Ford FL1A.

 

How do you measure oil performance to tell whether one is better than the other? I've always used cheap stuff and the engine is relatively clean, judging by the condition of the valves/springs. Serious question.

 

Honestly oil is oil for the most part and as long as you use the proper weight and change it per the owners manual. You should be fine, however as our LR's are getting older oil requirements are changing for the newer car engines and they're adding less and less Zinc. The engines in our D1/D2's is based of a 60's Buick 215 design and they require an oil with Zinc.

I started using Rotella 15/40 in my 05 Jeep Wranglers with the famous 4.0L I6 which once again is an engine design from the late 60's. I like it, for it's price, availability, and it's a very clean oil.
