I haven't been having much luck with a bigger hammer, but I soaked it in penetrating oil and will try again tomorrow.

How would doing it with vise grips work? Would you put them on one of the pulley bolts? I managed to slip on a 10mm wrench and extended the leverage, but I didn't go too hard on it because I was concerned about over-torquing the bolt.

Wedging a screwdriver in the idle pulley didn't do much. The pulley slips on the belt fairly easily anyway. Prying up against the back of the pulley with a crowbar also didn't seem to prevent it from moving.

I've got it off finally. Thanks to all for the help.

After waiting for a while for the penetrating oil to set in, I couldn't resist giving it one more go today. An authoritative crack with a heavy metal hammer on the end of the fan wrench did the trick. I wasn't securing the pulley with anything when it came loose.

Now I have to sort out how to pull the bracket stud that holds the heater hoses on the passenger's side of the intake manifold. I have a stud puller set, but this one is super-small. Hmmm....I think I'll run two nuts on there and try to pull it that way.

Did you hit it left, or right?

Hit it left (normal loosening direction). I think the penetrating oil helped. I'd also say make sure you're holding it so there's no play between the wrench and the bolt, and don't be too gentle with it.

Rovers north has a nice vid of replacing the power steering pump that shows a lot of this. Good reference.

Watching both of these videos prepares me to tackle the removal/replacement of the viscous fan and pulleys. Remember... 36" wrench...
