A couple things, they sell royal purple at walmart and it is around $8 per quart, no oil will show a noticeable improvement in MPGs. Maybe averaged over a fleet of vehicles you may see savings in fuel. The savings realized by using an oil like Royal Purple comes from extending your OCI's. With a good long drain synthetic you can extend your OCIs easily to say 10,000 - 15,000 miles. Mobil EP is good for 15,000 miles and amsoil has 25,000 mile oils. Now doing long OCIs like that usually requires some used oil analysis to make sure your oil is holding up. Form many people that is a pain and they would rather dump their oil every 3000 miles (even though modern oil is much better these days).

RP is every oil/fluid in Angus. He likes it very much. I will continue to run it as long as he lives here

Default Mobile 1 Price Drop @ Wal-Mart

I always have bought my Mobile 1 10w-40 at Wal-Mart. And got a spare quart at AutoZone in a pinch.
My last trip to Wal-Mart I found Mobile 1 5 quart container for $21.00. Thats a steal! Talk about rolling back the prices... When it used to be $26.00 and $29 at auto parts stores.
So my oil change including a K&N long filter is $36. That a good deal for 6 quarts of Mobile 1 with performance filter. I also use the big Filter Mag Magnet on my oil filter. I should have opened up the first filter with a Dremel wheel to see if it actually cought metal shavings.
I know Wal-Mart prices can vary by state and city. I just wondered what if anyone has seen that price drop lately. I change my oil every 4500 miles.
I also add a quart of Lucus Stop leak every two oil changes and have stopped me adding a half quart of oil per 4500 miles. Its nice when something actually works. Living in Indianapolis. It good to see a local guy make oil additives that work and build a stadium with his name on it.

Lucas stop leak is some nasty bottom of the barrel stuff. It is an oil thickener (bright stock) with no additives in it so you are essentially diluting your oil. If it is working you may want to try a thicker oil though I would just add the 1/2 quart in the 4500 mile (1/2 quart in 4500 is very very little consumption). I'm not sure what weight mobil 1 (mobile is a city in alabama btw) you use but try the 10w40 HM, 10w40 SUV or 5w40 TDT or 15w50 and see how it does. Also I put hard drive magnets on my oil filter and yes there are little metal pieces caught.

Only my local small time auto parts store and NAPA sell RP, and it is $10 per quart, look for it on sale and you might get it for $9.
My Wal-Mart's do not sell Mobil 1 15w-50 any more, they are reducing their oil choices and going with only the mainstream stuff that will sell.
I can get a 2.5 gal jug of Rotella for $25 though.
Wal-Mart only carries what will sell in that area.
I prefer Castrol, but I cant get it in the weights I want for I price I am willing to pay.

If you can get royal purple oil filters for $5 buy as may as you can and sell them on ebay. RP oil filters are quite nice but pricey. I know pep boys has royal purple oil change specials for $50 so maybe that is what you are talking about?

My 03 had a tick at startup using mobil 1 and no longer does whatsoever since switching to Royal Purple. I bought 10w40 for $6 a quart and it leaked for about 3 weeks and then stopped after the switch. Guess the RP cleaned the seals or whatever a little too much before they expanded back and quit leaking. Car definitely runs better since the switch. About time to change again and I'll go with RP again for sure.

Mine has a tick at startup too. It always goes away when she warms up though. Is that what yours did?

Yeah that is what it did but it has not made the tick since last summer when I switched oils.

My 03 is in the bad VIN range so I installed an oil pressure gauge and try to keep the oil good. I probably overdo it but I'd rather that then have it blow on me. So far everything is good and several people have told me it would have blown by now or at least shown some signs of wearing out the oil pump but all is good.

The Royal Purple leaked a lot for a month or so after the switch but it hasn't leaked since and clearly runs better. Just sucked having to park it out on the road and away from the front of the office for that month
