ARP Studs and Bolts
Head on Partly Torqued

After getting the my Left side head in place and starting the torque sequence, I discovered my torque wrench would not fit properly on the number 10 nut, lower rear. Although I was able to get 25 lbs done, the 50 failed.
I now have a torque wrench that fits.

My question is am I better off to to go back to zero and start fresh or just continue.

If I go back to zero do I need to replace my nice new head gasket

Given everything is apart now is the time to do this right.

 

Did you torque the rest of the nuts, or did you suspend the process at that point?
If you suspended it, I would simply resume the process.

If you didn't, and torqued the rest of the nuts, I would still resume but would also check the final torques on the others.

 

@mollusc thanks I stopped, so that one is somewhere between 20 and 50, I will check it at lunch.

 

Just continue the sequence. It is actually ** preferable ** to have some time delay between each stud/nut getting tightened in each stage.

 

You can always call ARP's technical support. They are really helpful.

@Sixpack577 I will I am nothing if not stubborn, I would have taken a day off work but we have a big network change over this weekend so I am working around that and family obligations.

Assuming my wife does not get tired of my "obsession with my Disco" and plant me with the roses

 

Success ! sort of I still have concerns, as the bolt seems to have at least 70 lbs on it. That implies the torque wrench used never clicked,I have contacted ARP tech to get their input, on backing off and re-torquing. But that is the last bolt in line, in the tightening sequence and 1st to be broken loose. In theory I could break it loose and re-tighten, it is the possible impacts of that that worry me.

But here is how I managed it, you might be able to get away with a really long extension,depending on your firewall.

Done and finished my shoulder hurts ( a few weeks short of 62,and as my doc likes to remind me you not 20 anymore take it easy) but I have it sorted out.

After reading a lot on several hot rod forums I went with removing that nut & washer re-lubing and reseating. It just made me feel better.

It took 45 minutes start to finish and the booster heat guard bracket had to be removed, but I got it torqued correctly.

A quick double check on both heads torque in the am and I can get back in the assembly groove
