Default Attaching A pillar trim

I bought a new A pillar trim piece, metal clips, and plastic grommets to replace my passenger side trim. The plastic grommets (or whatever they're called) don't seem to be correct - that is, they don't look the same as the ones I removed. The old ones were more or less flush with the trim, having a rounded end. Am I supposed to install these so that the end "mushrooms" or something, and perhaps cut off the excess? I will post a picture if necessary - was thinking maybe there's an obvious answer or solution I'm missing. The Rave manual is not very descriptive of the process and the diagrams provide no detail. Any help is appreciated.
