Default Automatic Gear problems

Drive problem when Differential in neutral

i just bought my first 4x4 (disco 2) amazing drive and way more then I expected.
I have a problem though, if I put it in drive when diff is in neutral it doesn’t go anywhere it just Revs the engine.
I have to put the diff in hi or low gear for it to start moving the diff light is not on when I do this but I have it in an open diff not closed diff.

You have full time 4 wheel drive, all the power runs through a center differential/Transfer case,if you put that in neutral the power goes nowhere.

So to be clear you have 2 neutrals 1 in the transmission and one in your Transfer Case/Center Diff. The engine power goes from the engine to the transmission, and then to the transfer case which supplies power to the wheels. The transfer case also act as a center locking differential allowing to you send the same power to both axles.

that's only the case on 2004 models, or on retro-fitted earlier years that either had the lockable t-case from the factory and had an actuator handle added, or which had the locking function added to the non-lockable case.

Default Update

I have the main gears in drive and the 4x4 gears in neutral that’s causes the 4x4 just to rev.

i have to pick 4x4 gears in hi or low, open or clears for it to start moving.

i thought that’s I had to leave the 4x4 gears in neutral and normal gears in drive for normal every days driving and only use 4x4 gears for off road or for towing.

is that’s correct and if not is there something wrong thought mite of been the gears selector ring or maybe something to do with the transfer box it self

and if so what can I do to fix the problem

"4x4 gears" will stay in 4 high all of the time during normal driving.
As mentioned, its full time awd so that transfer case has to be in a gear to work at all.

High for normal driving, low for off roading when necessary.

Theres nothing wrong with your truck

At first I was thinking get ready for hijinks, however, it being the OP's first LR and thinking it is a 4X4 leads me to believe this is legit. If no one ever told you and you did not read the manual, would you think that you could take your vehicle out of 4x4 mode by simply putting it in neutral and making it 2 WD. Granted it is AWD but, think about the logic the OP used.

Although it seems like a silly question/problem. I assumed new to 4x4's and young we have all been there at one time or another
