While we're talking tranny's...has anyone had any experience with the AutoZone brand ATF, Coastal? The AZ guy said it's bottled by Chevron, just stickered under the their store brand.

I buy my ATF at Target, one bottle a week until I have what I need.
I also change my ATF fluid once a year, it's under $3 per quart and at my Target it is Castrol, which is a brand I trust.
The wife does not even notice I put it in the cart because it's only one quart.

I used the Autozone kit with Valvoline Maxlife fluid. Worked perfectly, kit parts appear to be identical to the factory parts I removed.

Should be the same for kit for DI and DII. AB lists a similar kit that fits both models.

Changing the trans filter on a DI is a job, you need to drop the y-pipe and remove a cross member.

My BMW has a ZF transmission, & I can tell you, they don't like aftermarket filters.

I would normally go for the middle of the road price wise or if it was performance go all out.

Should I go for the 14.99 Autozone?

2001 Discovery II with 109,000 miles. Not sure when the fluid was last changed owned for less than a year.
I recently changed spark plugs and wires. Magnacore 8mm that I overpaid for since I didnt search the threads for the cheapest place and Platinum +4 plugs.
I'm not too sure how durable the tranny's in these are, but I do know that the better the filtering is, the longer the unit will last. I have a dodge ram diesel as my primary vehicle and there are always gripes about the transmissions getting wasted on them, so I went so far as to put an inline filter mounted in the transmission line to the cooler that has a removable oil filter (PH8A). The factory filters are either screens or felt, which at worst will only filter chunks over 100 micron, and at best will do around 20 microns. The spin on filter may not bring it down to zero contaminants, but for less than $50 it will give you a LOT longer transmission life.

Plus some brass fitting, hose clamps, and NAPA rubber hose... much better insurance than just replacing the stock filter, and for about the same price as the mid range one.
