Default Aux Lighting and Home Link

I have been debating on where to locate my aux lighting switches and thought that maybe I could fab something out of the home link console so I can position them near the sun roof switches. What I am wondering is, can I gut the home link console and still have a viable connection to the ceiling? I was going to cut out the front of it, mount a plate, and then mount the switches on that plate. I would appreciate some input from people who have added the home link and if anyone has a non-working unit, I would be interested in buying it if this works out. Thanks.
(I included a mock up to give you some idea what I had in mind)

Why not just use the empty spaces on the dash and interment cowling?
Urban Panzer has a nice write up on how to do this on his home page.

I don't really like the random buttons on the dash. I was thinking of using the accessory buttons but I thought using the overhead panel would be different/ unique. I just want to know if it is fundamentally possible to mod the home link unit.

Thanks anyway. I knew it was kind of an obscure post. The hard part is going to be finding a broken home link.

The only problem I see is that the Homelink unit is held in to the overhead console by the part you would have to remove to install your switches. If you can figure another way of getting the panel to attach to the console it sounds like a great idea to me.

How many light switches are you wanting to add? I use a factory switch for my Hella driving lights.

My 2000 Disco II didn't come with Homelink. I was able to find a unit on ebay for $17 and put it in. Removed the flat panel and the wire for it is right there under to connect it.

So you could maybe get a used working one and go with that. Another thought would be to look at people parting out IIs like the guys selling parts on ebay and ask them for a broken one if they have it. May get it for very little. Maybe call a dealer and see if they have a broken one they replaced?

AK, thats what I was wondering... so If I gut it I will need to find a way to mount it... If I can find one for $17 like princess did I think it would be worth a try. I was planning on 3-4 switches. One for my hellas up front, one for the lights in back, and one for future roof lights. Thanks for the replies! I didn't think I would get any answers!

I bought a Homelink from a D2 on ebay for $20 because my factory Homelink didn't work with my garage opener. If you want to experiment I can send you my old Homelink, just PM me your address.

To get it installed go ahead and gut it but leave the black plastic box connected. It uses that to hold the back in while the front snaps in. Shouldn't make any difference to leave the box on it. Also there is a connector up in there with a 12 volt and ground so you could put lights in the switches in you want to.

Great forum with an offer to have the part you need for free from a member!
