auxilliary gas tank
When I lived in Texas, I used to see lots of ranchers with aux tanks in their pick-up truck beds.
This company in Mansfield, TX makes a few different shapes and sizes. All of their tanks meet or exceed all DOT and EPA regulations.

Yes, we used to be able to do that, but no longer.
If you had one on a Disco and you were in a accident where there was a fire or health/death issue, you would not be covered and open for a huge law suit.

Those are mounted in the bed. Open air. I am selling a truck for a friend that passed away. It is a Super Duty Ford that has a 40 gallon tank in the bed under a camper shell. He had it professionally installed, and I have to "professionally remove" it. It can't be enclosed. I took it back to the installers because it smelled in the bed. They said it was normal and there is nothing they can do. That is why there are vents.
You said Ranchers- there you go. offroad.
