Default Bad Fuel consumption - need help to trouble shoot

Hi,
I haven't paid to much attention to fuel consumption until I recently took over my own servicing on the truck.
All fluids have been replaced.
It is running really smoothly and seems to have more power than before but the fuel consumption is terrible. I used to get about 450 km on a tank I'm now pushing to get 300 km out of a tank!

So where do I start - I don't have a clue.

START WITH DISCOMIKE'S 60K MILES SERVICE. ITS IN THE 'DISCOVERY' SECTION ON A STICKY AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE. SINCE YOU JUST REPLACED THE FLUIDS YOU CAN SAFELY SKIP THE FLUID CHANGES BUT THE REST OF IT NEEDS TO BE DONE. AFTER YOU HAVE DONE THE 60K SERVICE CHECK THE INFLATION IN YOUR TIRES. RUNNING EVEN 5psi LOW CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT FUEL USE.

FOR MORE SPECIFIC INFO ON THIS ISSUE WE NEED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT YOUR VEHICLE.

AND ARE YOU always RUNNING PREMIUM 92 OCTANE FUEL?

GOOD LUCK

It IS there (kind of)
Click on the "Write-ups" and "How-to" sticky. About half way down the page under Maintenance Information.

Try out the 60,000mi (100,000+/- KM) service list. New Plugs and wires can could help, as well as cleaning out the throttle body with some carb cleaner. Check your tyre pressure, and also check to see if you have any brakes sticking or wheel bearings getting tight (something you might not notice unless you actually check by hand and compare to the others). Good luck!

thanks,
I've done an induction clean.
tyres are fine.
I was more after info on what to look for with plugs & wires - they were replaced by a mechanic 10,000 km ago but before i start messing with them i wanted to know what I should be looking for that might point to bad milage.
do i need to look at electirics or is this bad a fuel consumption more likely valves or other?
Sure i can just keep replacing parts but i'll probably run out of cash before i stumble over the problem!

22l per 100km
that's less than 10 mpg.

thats about 7l per 100km too much!

How about your air filter? Anything that is going to lead to an engine not being able to breathe could potentially cause the engine to use more fuel.

How about the Distributor Cap and Rotor? If your spark is weak, that could lead to an inefficiency in how much fuel is burned.

Is your check engine light on? If so, check the codes on the little display box underneath the passenger side seat.

Check for a vacuum leak. If you have one, this could lead to excessive fuel consumption, because the computer will tell the engine to use more fuel to even out the fuel/air mixture. More Air=More fuel. Sometimes, you can even hear a vacuum leak over the normal operation of the engine. I've had that happen twice. Look under the bonnet while the engine is running, and listen for a hissing sound. If you can hear one, try and trace it down (compressed air comes in handy here, if you blow compressed air at a vacuum leak, the engine speed will increase).

If you say the engine seems to have more power, I am leaning heavily towards a vacuum leak. More Air=More fuel. More air+More fuel=more power.

Good luck!

Oxygen sensors will be worn out with that year. Have they been replaced?

My lead foot seems to have worn out as I've got older. - I drive very carefully these days.

tornado_735
filter changed when I did the fluids.

no engine light - does this model have one?

no display box either - at least I don't think so.

engine sounds really good - no hissing or air noises. very smooth idle, very even aceleration.

O2 sensors - i don't remember ever paying for these to be replaced - I will investigate.
