Default Bad Fuel Pump....??????

Vehicle: 98 Discovery, V8 gas w/fuel injection
location: Southern California
Problem: The Disco was starting hard and did not want to "catch" esp in the morning
when cold. We had to crank it over and over and then it would start. Sometimes, let
it sit for a while and then it would start.
Solution: I replaced the plugs and wires and found a few vacuum leaks and thought
that would do the trick.
It seemed better for a day but then completely stopped working. I can get it to start
with some starter fluid but it won't stay running for more than a few seconds.
Took the Disco home and pulled off the fuel line at the filter on the engine side of
the filter. (had replaced the filter 4 weeks ago)
Turn the Disco over and no gas comes through the line.
Fuel pump does not seem to be working at all.
I disconnected the battery and reset the system (twice) and still no gas coming through.

Question: Does this sound like a bad fuel pump? If yes, I never thought that fuel pumps
developed problems....thought they just went out completely.
Could there be a contact or relay that is causing the malfunction?

Any professional help or thoughs would be appreciated before i run out and spend $500.00
on a new pump.

Help!!

I just replaced the fuel pump in my 98 discovery LE last week. Only cost $79 plus 2 clamps and 6-8inches of hose. Got the pump at Autozone. Took about 1 hr time. There are several good write ups how. This used a aftermaket pump which is a direct bolt and wire in for the Rover pump. The pump can be accessed thru the top by plulling the rear carpet back. very easy job!

It does indeed sound like a fuel pump.

Fuel pumps slowly loose the ability to keep thepressure
to run the motor.

Yeah, would say that if you replaced the filter, next step is pump. Especially if you aren't getting fuel after the filter.

Good news is they are relatively easy to replace.

Got a coffee can full of diesel fuel handy? I would just take the pump out and stick it in the can. Run it forwards and backwards for a reasonable amount of time and your pump should work as good as new.
