Default Bad MAF without codes?

I would like to know if it is possible to have a bad MAF without having any code(s) or does a bad MAF always throw a code(s). Someone asked me the other day and I did not know and it left me thinking.

So did he say why he thought he had a bad MAF? Our Disco's will run poorly for a while without giving a code...but be assured it is coming. Even if it's a misfire from a plug wire.

you can also have a pending code that does not trigger a CEL light for a few drive cycles but it is there if you scan the computer. but to answer the original question if your MAF is actually bad there are a few codes that could trigger.

MAF's have 5 falt codes that our ECU can throw but rarely do. The usual way to know a MAF is bad is when you get a series of codes, usually 2 lean or rich codes for the cylinder banks and either a 733 or 734 tranny out of ratio code. When you get these, yes the MAF is gone.

agreed. codes could be pending upon completion of a drive cycle it will give you a CEL, most likely will be lean or rich does and one of the two tranny codes.
