Ball joints
x1. there is an article with photos on LR Aus website which details how. It's easiest with the specialist clamps and extractors though, depends on how tight or corroded in they are. It's usually a once in a lifetime jobby for most people.
I haven't done them on my D2 yet, but I did replace them on the 1999 P38 I owned previously. That truck had 123k on it when I did the job, with about half of the miles racked up in New England saw the axles had seen their share of salt. It took me about 6 hrs. total with air tools. Might be worth spraying your hubs where they fit into the steering knuckle with PB Blaster or an equally aggressive penetrant well before you plan to remove them. That's typically the tough part. Here's a vid from a forum member that recently replaced hi hubs showing how to get pretty close to removing the ball joints.
After that, you just need to pop out the joints and press in the new ones. You can get a loaner ball joint press from most auto parts stores that will work, although the adapters might not be perfect. One thing to keep in mind is that the ball joints on these trucks are adjustable so that the axle can be centered in the housing. They can be moved up and down. Before tearing the knuckle off, make reference marks on the knuckle and the housing and record the measurement between them so that you can set the new ball joints up the same way. The other approach is to use a special LR tool that nobody has.
