Default Battery/Alternator?

Hey guys I've got another one for you. Last night my battery light came on and I could tell the battery was about to go(week tach at stops and dim lights). When I got home the optima battery top looked blown out and it sounded like there were eggs frying inside of it. I got a new battery today and started fine though the battery light is still on and the fist start the tach worked and the second time it didn't.
Usually when I have an alternator go out the battery dies, not cooks.
Anyone have any ideas whats going on and/or how to troubleshoot it?

Thanks agian for all you guys do.

Dave

Go down first thing tomorrow and have your local auto parts store check your alternator, sounds like it died, possible overcharging issue.

I did that too on mine like Disco Mike suggested and sure enough it revealed a bad diode in the Alt. I'm just going to get new Alt parts from the local alternator guy rather than buy a new Alt. Thanks Disco Mike!
