So...googled the crap out of it, and read everything else. Most forums discussions are 10 years old that I found and want current info. Looking for a snorkel and like the SD / Mantec style but way pricey or NLA. My questions are below.
Are all the Ebay safari knock-offs the same? Has anyone had decent luck with a particular one? Good fit, better plastic, etc.
Does anyone know the diameter of the outlet at the top? I want to go with a canister type filter add-on. They appear to be 3" or 3.5"
The inlet oval from snorkel to factory air inlet looks small, like it reduces down to slip fit. Is this so? Does it matter? I am referring to all safari types as they look the same.
I can’t comment on the safari branded snorkels but the closest thing to a Mantec is a Southdown. When I bought mine it was cheaper to get it direct and shipped than to get it from a US based seller. Good construction and fairly easy installation. The one annoying part is that you can’t reverse the intake at the top, it only faces forward. Fine in the good weather but when the sticky snow starts falling it almost about clogs up the intake.
Mine is the aftermarket one made by RexyPow from Malaysia. Unfortunately, RexyPow passed away a few years ago and no longer offers them. However, there are other sellers on Ebay selling similiar ones. Safari was the original supplier, but the aftermarket ones are pretty much the same design and much better value.
My snorkel head diameter is 3".
One other suggestion... get this pre-cleaner snorkel head option. Once you run out of the supplied 5 filters, you can make your own from material via Amazon or Home Depot:
All the aftermarket ones are the same looking. The main thing reported is the template kind of sucks. I have an ARB/Safari Snorkels one and the template was spot on but i suspect the performance is no better/worse than a knock off one.
I just got a cheap chinese snorkel last week and tried installing it on the weekend, and failed due to crap quality.
It's some "Equipment addict" brand. Item SLRDC2AT.
The template is good. Made the holes according. The snorkel sits and lines up really nice to the fender but the angle is wrong so it won't line up with the A pilar. And thus it's blocking the door and not going to get it bolted to the A pilar.
You can see it in the pic
Also the instructions were a bit fubar, as the only guide for the snorkel holes is for the outer fender, and not to the inner fender.
There's some aluminiun piece, that I see is in a Terrafirma snorkel also, but zero instructions on what to do with it. And the snorkel won't fit through the inner fender original hole.

Oh I like the prefilter idea since I can no longer run the top part backwards with the new rack/tent and it gets super super dusty here in the summer in CO. Not looking forward to it freezing up this winter when it storms bc I've had that freeze up happen multiple times when the top part faces forward...
Personally, I hate the look of the style that mounts to the side of the fender. I guess that's the ARB/Safari style. It reminds me of that Walk Like an Egyptian video. If I had to get a snorkel, I'd pay for the SD/Mantec one. I presume that's the one that LR used on the Camel trucks and the G4 trucks. It looks the best and it's pretty discreet. Just my opinion though.
Goliath off-road has a youtube video installing a cheaper safari style and had the same problem. They took a heat gun to the corner where it ramps up and fixed it. Not sure if the heat messed up the texture or not.
Thanks for all the tip. I think I will pass on the Safari style. Talking to a friend I might try to duplicate a Mantec. If you get over to the turbo plumbing sights there are a lot of tube and connector options out there.
