you can always put in a D1 pan with a dipstick

Mine had 84k on it (purchased at 82.5k) when I did the service and it shifted fine. As far as I could tell, it had NEVER been serviced. The fluid smelled bad, was a little dark and the pan had the black sludge and the iron debris on the magnet. Let drain for 3+ hours, changed out the filter and pumped in 8 liters of Mobil 1 ATF. Now it operates just like the ZF transmission in my S Class...beyond smooth, even when manually shifting through the gears.
See, I'm in the same boat. Bought mine with 83k and I know it's never been done. I did my differentials and t-case last weekend and it was obviously the first service. Nasty oil that was brown/gray. Checked the tranny while I was under there, expecting it to be low but some nasty fluid ran out. I can't wait to service that. A few more things and my truck will be caught up on service.
