The best bet for a Disco II Daily Driver's Thermostat (NY Weather)
I noticed AB only sells the genuine thermostat and a "soft" one. Others on here recommend a 180 degree stat from Luck 8. What is the difference between these items and what would be the best bet for a daily driver that experiences all 4 seasons?

I wouldn’t touch the no name 180F thermostat from Lucky8. Back when it was an actual Britpart boxed 180F yes that’s an excellent thermostat, however they now sell a no name 180F thermostat that DOES NOT open at 180F. If you buy a thermostat from Lucky8 make sure yoy get the LR OEM grey 180F thermostat.
P.S. Even the 33.00 180F thermostat from Auto Zone is better than Lucky8’s so called 180F black thermostat!

The last one I bought from Lucky8 (2 months ago) came in absolutely nothing. It had the clip normally found on Freelander Thermostats, and I paid 40.00 for it. Months earlier I'd found a seller on Ebay with a so called black 180F thermostat for 10.00. I bought it as a test to see if I'd found a cheaper source than the usual 33.00 units from Britpart in a brown cardboard box with a D90 on it from Lucky8. Britpart thermostat was always stamped as a 78C unit vs the normal 82C and it didn't have the Freelander mount/clip on it.
I had tested the Ebay el cheapo and it DID NOT open at 180F, and that's why I ordered the 40.00 unit from Lucky8 expecting the excellent Britpart 180F I've bought from them so many times in the past with flawless results. It showed up in an envelope wrapped in bubble wrap. No P/N, no brand, nada zip nothing. It looked identical to the 10.00 ebay el cheapo, but I went ahead and installed it, tossed coolant into the D2, and bleed it properly. D2 would run in the 210-217F range with that thermostat. I contacted Lucky8 and was told they had a bunch of stuff come in & they were unsure of the brand, model sent to me. Well 35.00 in coolant wasted, my time wasted, and that did it for me honestly. I drove down to my Auto Zone and paid 33.00 for a Motorad 180F unit and the D2 now runs in the 188-207F range.
We had a lot of people report on here last summer that the black 180F thermostat's purchased from Lucky8 didn't seem to open at 180F and I'm 99% sure they were all thinking they were getting the black 180F britpart (stamped 78C) thermostat, but in fact they were just getting the 10.00 el cheapo ebay wonder at 40.00.
P.S. The locally bought Motorad is doing excellent btw & it beats that Lucky8 so called 180F hands down.
