Default A better tire carrier?

I had to cut and relocate my tire carrier UP in order to place my larger than stock spare, and was initially concerned that the the notch I cut to accommodate the wiper arm would crack. Nope; the top bolt holes (both sides) cracked. Our tire carriers are made of very brittle metal, just FYI. I heard squeaking coming from the rear and stopped just in time to keep my heavy tire from falling off on the interstate. I had to remove the tire in a suit and white shirt. Sadly, this leaves me with no tire carrier. I can get another one on eBay or but I expect similar results. A bumper swing carrier seems like overkill (and the price is ridiculous); has anyone run across a reasonably priced tire carrier that will work with bigger, heavier tires (33")?

Best,

Charlie V

I just flipped mine upside down and drilled two new holes for the middle screws. As far as the wiper, I just loosened it and rotated it up. No cutting. I fit a 33" tire, just barely, as it rubs the stock bumper just a bit. If I has help it probably wouldn't rub, but I couldn't hold the carrier "up" while tightening it.

I will check that out. I can't remember whether I flipped mine and whether I drilled holes. But the carrier itself is very brittle metal... I couldn't believe it when I saw huge cracks on both sides at the top bolts.

Have to convert to dollars, deduct VAT and add shipping. Done!

You could also look at John Craddock. I've never ordered from Devon, but I have bought from John Craddock a few times and always found them to be very competitive with prices and very reasonable on shipping.

I have the Devon carrier, got it from Lucky 8, and absolutely love it. It was a bit pricey but worth it if you don't have a steel bumper you can fab a carrier for. Now that I have my bumper I may be willing to sell mine if you're interested...

I just received the quote and it is pretty high. I haven't run the conversion to dollars yet but with shipping it is 123 pounds, which means that the shipping is more than the price, subtracting VAT. That's too high. I'm running by a fab shop this afternoon but I'd love to know what you want for yours. I'm in the US (75602).

Best,
