Beware guys i was using bottle cap to change a tire and i have used this jack on numerous occasions in the past. So i jacked up truck and then stepped back for a second before removing the tire. I heard a loud pop and the truck smashed down and jack oil went everywhere. After investigation i found that that the seal failed at the top of Jack where where the piston meets the bottle cap. Thank god I stepped back for a second or it could have been catastrophic so please be cautious when using it. There was a thread before about checking your jack for oil but this was not the case here and i would hate to hear a story about a guy getting smashed under his truck.

 

You mean bottle jack, yes they are cheap, never heard of one exploding but have seen lots of them loose their seal and not work, even when brand new, just out of the box.

 

I always use the jack stands after lifting whether or not I'm going under or not. But this is a great reminder to be careful! Thanks for sharing.

Yes mike the bottle cap jack, i have also seen them not work but never seen one blowout like this one did. Just a scary ordeal and i wanted to advise everyone.

 

I think the jack is Italian. I'm pretty sure land rover included it to prove that there are worse countries for automobile quality than England.

 

Sorry i need to clear this up the seal did not fail****** now after messing with it and getting the pistons to come up a bit i found the spot. the bottle jack has the first smaller piston that pushes up and then the second larger one. The larger one split in half and that is where the fluid sprayed from wow even worse than i had thought it was. The temperature is around sixty so that's not a factor in case you were wondering.

I sent a picture to Disco Mike so he can post this on the other forums hopefully he can get it posted here if not i will get to it later.

No never got dropped... i think i would know that. Even if it would have been dropped how would that affect the internals of the jack?

 

I can't imagine the bottle jack doing much. How high does it raise? I have access to a few lifts and haven't had a flat in the Disco so I haven't used mine yet.

 

The bottle jack is meant for replacing a flat tire, but if it collapses with your hand, arm, or leg in the wrong place, you're going to be in a bad way.
