Lots of chatter!

I ordered a new radiator anyway.

Same thing here. Normal driving or long term idle peaks at 195.

Coming off a drive down to and idle or under load I see 197-205 at the sensor. While the rest of the engine side cooling system is barely at 175-180.

My mechanical fan moves a boatload of air, leading to my theory of overcooling.

Either way I ordered a $200 radiator to put in this weekend. Can't hurt right?

BTW, I have the ebay electric fan,

Land Rover Discovery 99 04 FFD Custom Electric Xtreme Cooling Fan Conversion Kit | eBay

Dont waste your money, it doesn't fit over the entire radiator. leaves a good 3 inches on wither side of the rad if you center the fan and leaves about 2 inches exposed on the bottom.
I contacted them, and they claim it needs room for extra airflow at highway speeds. yea, sure. someone tested it and it failed. Couldn't regulate the temperature.
End rant

Sorry to thread jack, but just my 2 cents.

I thought about it more and reached the conclusion that the fan clutch may not be pulling enough air so I'm going to try to trade it in under warranty for a heavy duty version and see if that eliminates the temperature spike. With the ambient air temp being much cooler, the condenser fan is no longer activated due to programming parameters.

Let me know how that works out.
I'm leaning in the same direction.

I'm in the same boat as the OP.

My story: I just swapped out head gaskets, new radiator, new water pump, and Grey soft spring warm weather stat.

Temps:
188-190.4 (sometimes 185-86) cruising on the highway.
190-194 under 40mph
Spikes to 204-206 at idle. On very rare occasions 197.6
I Don't get it. I bled, bled, and bled the cooling system. Even added water wetter. My 01 idled at 197.6 all day, before and after head gasket swap, didn't matter what the ambient was.

I'm stumped, why the high spikes at idle? Raising the RPM's to ~1000-1100 drops the temp to ~197.

I Just ordered material to fit the 180 inline stat.

So I guess that means I shouldn't go buy a new radiator. I did go trade in my 6-month old 2991 heavy duty fan clutch for a new one of the same model. This one has much more resistance. Although my temps didn't get higher than 201, I only got to drive a few miles with it before I reached my place. Either way, it didn't help as much as I thought it would. Throw that new stat setup on their as soon as it comes in! I'm anxious to know how well it works.

I witnessed something interesting this morning. Figured I would share it with the group. Maybe, you guys noticed it in your trucks maybe, you didn't.

My SAI pump kicked on, for roughly five seconds, after the engine was already warmed up (at operating temp). The temp displayed on the UG read ~199. What triggers the operation of the pump, radiator coolant temp sensor? If so, would this point to a stuck closed t-stat? I gotta believe my radiator is not plugged, it's new. Thoughts?

Hey, what the hell? My truck pump came on today, and only today too! It has happened once or twice in the past, but not recently. Wow, that's incredible, the coincidence. where are you located??

I guess the gremlin has two homes, now!

I'm located in Phoenixville, Pa. Just outside of Philly. Ambient was high 40's yesterday during my experience.
