Question Black cat --> dead speedo

A black cat ran across my driveway as I was leaving for work a couple of Fridays ago.

After owning several other British cars, and waiting for something to break on the Rover, I was worried that the cat would be the tipping point.

I drove about a mile when I laughed to myself thinking that maybe I dodged the bullet, when I look down to see that the speedometer was dead. Darn that cat. ;-)

It has since returned intermittently. (the speedo, not the cat.) My questions are, short of taking the truck to the dealer for a scan, what components/connections can I check that might cause an intermittent speedo failure?

Thanks,
John

SLABS unit is my guess.
The transmission on a DII is electronically controlled and almost everything on the truck runs through the SLABS unit.
