So, according to my machine shop, the block is toast.


Cylinder bores are worn out. I know the block can't be bored oversized since the liners are so thin, so I'm either looking at trying to source a block that's in better shape, or do the top hat liners. They are $500 a set from Turner with the exchange rate right now. Anybody got a set for sale by chance?

If I do liners, that puts me in over $1K for liners and machine work, with an additional $600 for some new pistons. I cannot afford a new short block. that's just not possible.


I'm looking for any and all options here.

 

I come across motors all the time for $500 ish running and garanteed. Maybe you are overthinking this.

 

Mine was running. Ran very well actually. I just didn't want to hear it knock. So, I tore it down hoping to find a bad position skirt. Instead I found that nearly every piston was worn out, and the block has wear beyond spec.
I could put it back together with a light hone and a set of pistons. It'll still knock and I wont be happy.

Aren't stock liners available?
You can heat and remove them with a big propane torch.
Pin them, and you're done.

I don't know where to buy them, but I thought that they were available. I'll look around,.
They are nothing special either, I wouldn't be suprised if they were available in certain lengths of iron pipe.
I'll see if I can find the wall thickness and o.d, as it's a 3.7 i.d
I can measure the length too, as my block is on the stand now. May be hard to measure an exact wall thickness, but I'll look at it tonight.
If the pipe was available, it would only need cut to length.
Have the block decked/milled after
I wouldn't be suprised if there are replacement liners from other engines that may work also.
These engines are super low tech.

 

Check dweb parts for sale section. Someone has a set of the top hat liners for sale. iirc, for $450 shipped. So, that saves you the $50 plus shipping and import duties from Turner.
