Default Blown Head Gasket: Need mechanic recommendations!

Hey Folks,

My 188k miles D2 has blown the head gasket. The shop that I usually take it, North Texas British, quoted me $7k to do the job, which seems quite high. I'm hoping I could find someone else to do it, otherwise I'm afraid it'll be the end of the road for my D2 :-( Any recommendations? I live in McKinney, TX (Dallas suburb).

Thank you!

Call around, that is a lot. It is about a 10 hour job, plus parts and head truing (decking).

Parts out Atlantic British are about 160.00
Head decking about $200.00 - if you need new heads 600+ and decking (used)
Labour 10 hours 1250 to 1400

So 1800 - 3000, depending on if you need replacement heads and the cost of those and other misc stuff

You can add about 300 for a hot pressure test of the block at least here in BC

Thank you, Richard. Yeah, that's what I was thinking, $3.5k max. The problem is most mechanics are not willing (prob don't know how to) work on this truck...

@BraziliaNut may not be willing which means they are either too busy or lazy, I had not done head gaskets in 40 years when I did my Disco in the driveway. Pushrod V8's are just stupid simple, even sleeved V8's.

If you are a TX Rovers Member they're supposed to give you discounts on service at NTX British or so I was told. 7k seems double the cost to me though.

If any mechanic can do an LS HG job or Chevy 350 HG job they can tackle the Buick 215 based LR V8.

Job itself isn't hard can easily be tackled over the weekend.

That feels a LOT like a "we don't want to mess with it" price. Heck for that price there are probably people on here who would drive there, load it up on a trailer, bring it home, repair it and then trailer it all the way back to you.

$7k is the I don’t want to do it price. If you have a RAVE manual and a basic set of tools you can do this job. There is absolutely nothing complicated about it. Zip the heads off have them checked and decked and put them back on. It’s really that simple.

I know you can do it man!

I do have the RAVE and watched the Atlantic British youtoube video about the repair. I'm able to do some jobs, but for this one, I don't have the space and frankly time to get it done. Too much. I'm hopeful I'll find someone willing to tackle it though. There's too much history, blood and tears on my D2 to let it go like that...

Right?? Not sure what these guys were thinking... It's a good shop, specialized on Rovers, but they sure charge a lot!

I'm not a member, but yeah, even with a discount, NTX British is way off..., gotta go somewhere else
