bottom end knock on start up 98 disco
i did a oil change a couple of months ago and since then i have a slight bottom end knock until the engine is warm, when i drive the noise is gone,i put the correct oil in but i was recomended to put a oil treatment in,i think this treatment could be the problem any advise
What sort of oil treatment did you use? I'm not really a big fan of those "kerosene" type additives that are supposed toclean the engine out. I used one on my old diesel and wasn't too happy with the results.
i was advised to put semi synthetic 10/40,the treatment was simalar to stp,ill do a fresh oil change again and filter without the treatment as first time ive used one of these and the last, the outside temprature is not to cold,im sure its that treatment.
i only put it in due to a knocking sound on accelaration, found out two manafold bolts were lose.
what oil would you recomend cheers

Here most people use 15w40 in their diesels,Shell is good, Castrol and Mobil too.
Full synthetic is best. If you used a viscosity modifier like STP then you probally clogged the oil filter, those things thicken the oil and make it harder to pump until it gets warm and thins back out.
My theory is that if you need to use additives then you need a different motor oil. You just got the trk and are looking for help, so I recommend Shell full synthetic 15w40 diesel motor oil and a good oil filter.
I do not know if you can get a Fram oil filter or not, but DO NOT USE FRAM. Their oil filters are junk.
Hope this helps.

cheers spike555,ill try a 15w40,i did think it could be the addative, with regard to the filter it was a fram.cheers for the advise its been parked up since xmas so i only go out to turn the engine over so there should be minimum damage thank
No problem, happy Rovering.
When you find out what specs you have let us know, I am curious as to what was special ordered for your trk.
Here we get only little choices, like trim levels and accessories. No special ordering.

My guess is it has nothing to do with the oil or additive, rather, the anti-drainback valve in the oil filter isn't working properly.Try a different, better oil filter when you change your oil next time. Napa Gold (WIX), Motorcraft or A/C Delco filters, to name a few, are widely available and really good. Stay away from the cheapies, especially the typical Fram (the cheapest of all). BTW, cut open a few filters and you'll see Fram are the cheapest made filters on the market. You can spend the same $$ and do much better.
