Ya - a concrete barrier. I'm in PA and we call them Jersey walls. I think its because Jersey highways always seem to be under construction.

They should call them PA walls...

That sounds like quite the bonding experience with your new Rover, no way you could ever get rid of that truck with that story like to to start things off!

(And I've always called em Jersey Barriers....but never questioned 'why Jersey?')

Good luck bringing it back to life, keep us posted!

Audi, I'm sorry man. I feel bad for you. I've been through some hell with my Rovers- though nothing like you. I've had LABOR bills higher than $1500, but I've never been stranded. Well, once... but it was nice out.

I feel for you, bro.

A question for everyone else, though: How the heck can he heat his engine up that bad, that many times, and for that amount of time, and NOT crack his block? Do D1s have steel blocks?

I barely heat mine up (didn't hit the red) and it cracks the block...

Ohhh, I see. Hey Audi- take your Disco to a dealer to have the block tested. I put $1700 into a head gasket job and some other parts, only to find out a week later that my block was cracked the whole time.

DI's have the same block and heads as the DII, the only difference is the engine management and air intake.

My $.02 is that at the end of the DII range their quality control went out the window. Anybody else notice that '03's and '04's all have major engine issues?
I have now heard of oil pump failures on both years as well as dropped cylinder liners on '04's.

I have a couple of questons/comments. How did you get there to pick up the Disco? You said you had to drive it 200 miles to get it home. Seems to me, the major flaw that really complicated the situation was assuming that you could just buy it with a few minutes test drive and be able to drive it two hundred miles home without issues.

Most of the people who do take a risk buying these basically unknown condition vehicles usually go ahead and plan to trailer them home initially. That provides a much higher probability of success in getting home without incident.

Sounds like you did manage to get what you apparently wanted and possibly more than you initially bargained for. Good luck with it. What color is it?

If you did not do too much additional damage, you may end up with a decent vehicle after all. If you change your mind and want out from under i, let me know more about it. There are lots of spare parts for DI's arround Pittsburgh I am finding out as I do more to mine.

It probably did have a blown head gasket when I bought it (as someone mentioned). This is not a big deal to me as I can do the work myself. I wanted the color and options. I figure I bought it cheap enough that I could live with doing the head gaskets.

There was no water in the oil. The water and oil left the truck in a large cloud that followed me the whole way home. I am going to get the head gaskets changed, exhaust leak fixed and replace the ignition components. It should run okay then. I also need to find out why I lost several electrical systems 20 miles from home.

Thanks for the tips! I will download the Rave and get to work.

I sure as hell hope I didn't crack the block! I didn't really think of that. I don't think just because it was overtemped a bunch means I cracked the block. I did cool it down every time it hit the max. Who knows.

I will not take it to the dealer but there is a private Land Rover guy nearby. Maybe I will talk to him about the block.

Danny has a good point about my assuming I could drive it home. But, the Disco was supposedly still in use. They still had their "stuff" in it and just had the oil changed two weeks ago. I figured it was a running/driving Disco. While my story was long and troublesome, I love an adventure. I honestly did not get upset the entire trip. I just laughed.

A $40k truck for $1500? Yep - I do that. I bought a '95 Audi S6 (5 cylinder turbo) not running for $1100 - not running. $400 and 5 hours later I had a nice daily driver.

Its a white truck with factory brush guards. I really like it and am starting to tear into tonight. The wife likes and the kids love it. It will be a great 4th vehicle.

Thanks for all the info and support. No, I didn't take the safe approach but I have a good story.

I have bonded with it I suppose. It is in good shape overall and, if I fix it, I will know it well and should have a great truck.

Cheers,
Dave K.

I can't recall ever reading about these engins cracking the block.
slipped liner, yes
warped heads, yes
dropped valve guides, yes

frustrate ya?, yes
The absolute worst case scenario is the you have to buy a used 4.6 mtr, rebuild it and toss 'er in.

Given your stated abilities - motor &1000 - $1500, freshen - $300, stay on maint, great truck worth what you've got in it 10 yrs. from now.

(not considering rust - pull the plastic rocker/sill covers, that's the only possible rust you won't notice, I hate rust)

If you need a booster, google "rainforest challenge", it'll wind you up for a month or so.
