Default Brake Caliper Guide Pin Stuck

I am changing the front brake pads on my 04 Disco, which should be a dead simple job. Not for me. The bolts came out of the guide pin OK, and the caliper slipped off the pads fine. The top guide pin slid out of the caliper carrier with no trouble. The bottom pin refuses to budge. Have used Liquid wrench, tapping with hammer, pounding really hard with hammer, vice grips, pipe wrench, heat, C clamp, all to no avail. Any thoughts??? Obviously the pin is destroyed, but that is easily replaced if I can get it out. Otherwise, a new caliper carrier !!!$$$

Someone posted a link to some cheap carriers recently. $30 or so if I recall correctly.

HEAT THE HELL OUT OF IT AND THEN REMOVE IT WITH VISE GRIPS but be sure you are heating the pin and not the bushing

Looks like a crap job over Christmas or possibly a new style Christmas present gift wrapped ..................... a new caliper.

In all honesty, aftermarket calipers are cheap these days so might not be worth fighting with after all.

Apologies, thinking of another truck brakes. The pins slide in the carriers in the D2. So even better the carriers are cheaper and in the UK come complete with the slider pins and rubber boots.

This seems to happen a lot on these machines. Replace the rubber sleeve fitting things if they start to look deteriorated. A kit with two pins, the rubbers, and a pack of grease for the pins cost only $25ish front or back. Certainly beats having to buy another carrier AND pins.

OK, I give up. Removed the carrier, soaked it in Liquid Wrench over night, clamped it in a vice, heated with a propane torch, twisted it with a pipe wrench, succeeded in breaking it off :-(

Finally did what I should have done earlier, bought a new carrier. From a LR dealer, about $450, pin extra, not in stock. From AB, $120 including pins and boots, in stock. Guess which I chose.

When I am in a proper state of mind I will post my 2 year battle with the engine in this Discovery (actually, three + of them).

Cheers,
Rod

a new aftermarket brake caliper carrier is about $40 each side including pins. Even LR OEM aren't anything like as much $450 including pins. Admittedly these are UK prices but hey ho they can't mark up that much in the US. I'd double check the price with whoever sold them.

When I had this problem, and a hyper-extended caliper, I went to the junkyard. I got two front calipers, two brackets, good pins/boots, flexible brake lines, and those 12-point bolts that bolt the bracket onto the truck for only $100. Even came with half-used brake pads.

I just had this same issue. I was not able to find the carrier cheaply, $80 on this side of the pond was the cheapest. So I cut off the end of the pin that protruded from the carrier, clamped the carrier in a small drill press, center punched the pin that was stuck and started drilling with small bits up to large. I was able to finally get the old pin out only after drilling to almost 100% of the brass insert size. But I got it done and once my new pins arrive I will reinstall the front brakes with a lot of high temp grease on the sliders!
