Brake and idle problem.... crap....
I got two new problems with my 1998 Disco, here is the first:
I just finished my tune-up on Tuesday; fuel filter, bosch platinum +4, Magnecore 8mm, and I cleaned the throttle body and the IAC, since it was stalling at stop signs. Still need to clear the CEL to check if the tune-up took care of the o2 codes I had. Everything was fine until yesterday (Saturday), when the truck started to idle at 1200 rpm. And if I put the truck to neutral while driving, the tach waves between 1200rpm and 2500rpm. I think it may be caused by a bad stepper motor, but I was told those rarely fail. Anyone has an answer?
Second problem (unfortunately caused by a moronic mechanic hired by the PO); I found a hexagonal box hammered on the caliper bolt, ant it stripped the bolt.... and it seems the mechanic tried his high technology technique on every 12sided bolt he found on the truck... ie the caliper bolts. It is now impossible to unbolt the calipers, and since I need to do a rear brake job, (including the pistons in my rear calipersand rotors) I am in great need of a way to perform the job. Is it possible to split the caliper without causing further problems?
Thanks for any advice!

You will need to get a special tool to remove the bolts, and then you will need new bolts.
You cna get the tool needed to remove stripped bolts from Sears, but I do not know if you have a Sears in Canada and I do not know the name of the tool.
But if you go to your local hardware store you still might find one.
As for the idle, sounds like your stepper motor. Take it back out and clean it again, there might be a piece of carbon or something lodged in there.

We've got sears in Canada, but we've got something even better than that called Canadian Tire. I think the tool you're talking about is called "Grabit" or something similar... it is a bolt extractor right? And if I'm right, it should look like this:
http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/pr...=1232983198523
Wouldn't it be simpler to separate the calipers?
I will check for the tool and for my stepper motor and I'll get back to you later this week...
Thanks Spike

HAHAHA...that link wont work here in the US. I need to enter a postal code.
If all you are doing is replacing the brake pads then you do not need to remove the calipers from the truck.
It would be easier, but not necassary.

Try with my postal code G0R 3J0... hahahahahaha
Well... I need to replace the pistons and the seals.... the Disco ate a brake pad set within a month... and while I'm at it I will replace the rotors since they show heavy wear.
For the idle problem.... what puzzles me is that the truck has been running fine for 5 days before having idle problems.

I highly recommend getting a snap on set of the bolt extractor
I normally say snap on is a rip off for most people, but i've had 3 different brands that the socket simply wears out, and won't work great anymore. My snap on set has yet to wear out

the one I'm looking for costs only 30$CDN... and it has a life warranty on it son I don'T really mind having a cheap one
I hope it will clear by itself.... hahahahaha
but I will doublecheck the connection of the sparkplug wires, the MAF and the stepper motor... and if I have time for vacuum leaks.
Thanks
