Default Brakes, lack of faith. Where to begin troubleshooting?

I've lost faith in my brakes.

I was backing down from my ramps (16 inch-ish), in low and it took nearly full pressure to get it under control.
Then I tried HDC on a steep but flat dry paved road, and it was very rough. All the ABS working hard, very jerky. Didn't feel right.
And I've never been pleased with the feel of how she behaves at parking lot speeds when I do a switch from accelerator to brake — seems like a long delay before the breaks have any real grab. Travels quite a distance too.

I'd love to drive a different Disco 2 for two minutes just to feel the difference. Anyone in Leslieville, Toronto? I know there's at least five of you out there.

So I want to take her into someone qualified (again, Leslieville people, any suggestions), but would like to at least have an idea as to what's going on. And hopefully have any parts ahead of time - local land rover parts are $$$$$.

Any suggestions as to where to start?
Rotors and pads both look good and are fairly new. No codes are showing. I changed the fluid (with fancy $$$ fluid) about 12 months ago, it was pretty dark.
Beyond that, I haven't' a clue.

Thanks Again!

N.

I would start with either bleeding the brakes yourself or taking it somewhere to bleed them for you. It's really not a hard thing to do and it might very well solve your problem. The best way to bleed the brakes without a computer is with a helper. Have someone hold down pressure on the brake while you open the bleeder. Have them tell you when the brake hits the floor and close the bleeder before they let up on the brake. After you close the bleeder tell them to pump up the brake and hold down pressure again and repeat the process 5 or 6 times per wheel. Stop and fill up the reservoir after each wheel. Do the brakes in order- RF,LF,RR,LR

if the pedal is hard, my vote is the booster
if the pedal is soft, needs to be bled, or you have a vacuum leak.

What are tell tale signs of a failing master cylinder?

Okay, been reading about boosters. Will have to go through all the troubleshooting steps. Am I having fun yet?
