Brass colored shavings in t-case
Hey everyone,
As the title says we were changing the t-case fluids and found some brass colored shavings in the old lube and was wondering if anyone has a cross this. I checked the gears and they look good so I can only think that it maybe a bushing of some type.
Thanks

I found these in a used front output housing I bought in December. I think it's from a preload shim, but since the housing I bought was OK (the shredded shim came from another part of that T-case) and since my own transfer case was OK too, I cleaned everything and put it back together and it's been running great since. A friend of mine is pretty knowledgeable with gearboxes and told me not to worry (in this case) because copper is very soft and the gears are so hard.

In your case if a preload shim has disintegrated, it's possible that one of the shafts is now out of spec, meaning the teeth are not perfectly aligned when torque is applied, leading to premature wear. I would certainly keep a very close eye on this, and plan to replace the oil in a few months just to make sure there's no new metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug.
