Broken drive shaft and possible transfer case 03 discovery 86k
i have a 03 discovery and the front drive shaft broke, i bought an after market one and my mechanic claims it dosent work and that the transfer case is bad is this possible? I was pulling away from a red light whe it happened. There are no cracks on the tranie and i do not see how or why the tf case would be bad. the shaft broke at the ujoint where the shaft connects to the transmission.I bought the new shaft from driveshaft power inc out of FL. when the roll back arrived to tow the rover the rear wheels were locked but after he began to pull it backwards onto the truck they broke free and the truck rolled right up. when in park the truck can still be pushed, i was told that was due to the drive shaft not being connected. Can any give me advise so i dont have to keep buying parts i may not need. Thanks so much
The front drive shaft is connected to the transfer case, same as with the the rear drive shaft. The rear output shaft could have broken on the transfer case when the truck was pulled with the tranny in P. You cannot move the truck in P even if the front drive shaft is removed.
Yes the t-case from a 2000 will work in your '03.
Make sure the t-case is not in neutral, if it is in neutral your transmission is disconnected from the wheels.
And it sounds like the tow truck driver broke something.
But good luck with that, its your word against his.

use the transfer case shift **** between the transmission gear shift and the dash. It is slightly to the right of center and looks just like a ****. Forward is low and back is high gear. Neutral is in between the two. There should be an instruction sticker just under the drink holders below the climate control controls. Phil
Thanks Phil, should it be in high or low?and why is there even a neutral on it if it disengages it. Any clue as to why the rear wheels were locked up after the front shaft broke and came lose as it was being pulled up on the roll back?
Your back wheels could only be locked because of two reasons: your tranny was in P (I know you say it was in N, but how sure are you?) or the emergency brake was engaged.
Find what has broken and that will be the clue to what really happened.
The transfer case has a N between H and L, that's just the way it works.
