Default Burnt smell ?

Ok so you guys know I purchased my 02' Disco (83k miles) about a week ago. First thing I had to do was go get an oil change & windshield blades for the front. The engine sounds wonderful no funny noises or anything..Perfect.

Coming home today I noticed just for an instant a "burnt" smell. Like a burnt fluid of some kind is what it smelled like to me. I checked the first day I had it and no leaks whatsoever checked the new oil and it's all still there and clean, the temp. Gauge didn’t move so I’m assuming it wasn’t the coolant. I only smelled this for an instant and when I got home I opened up the hood and smelled around the engine and the front drive axle and nothing no burn smell..What should I check next?

If they greased your driveshaft it could be grease splashing on the cats

I know they didn't grease the front driveshaft I took it to Jiffy Lube. Funny you should mention that though b/c reading the forums the front driveshaft was my main concern it being a 02' Disco, but that seems ok. Spike the oil change was about 3 days ago that wouldn't have burned off by now?

Thanks for the input just reading the forums this last week I am learning a lot! Mainly that I will be spending a LOT of money on this Disco (this is actually my dream car if you can believe it) for years to come.

Depends on how much/long you drive it.
3 days for you could be a total a 2 miles, I have no idea.
It could just be a fluke, could be a leak.
Are your valve covers leaking? (they all leak, just snug the bolts and the leak will stop)
I am guessing they used 5w-30 and if so they will surly leak as that oil is to thin for these trucks in the summer time.

Bingo on the 5w-30. I thought that sounded too light for this truck when they told me that. What weight oil should I ask for next time? I will snug those valve covers...Thanks!

All the quick lubes use the 5w-30, they have it in a bulk container downstairs.
You can ask for other weights and brands though.

For the summer I use 15w-40 and 5w-40 for the winter.
Run at min a 10w-40.
Not knowing where you live...if you live south of the Mason Dixon Line, use the 15w-40 all year.
You may need to do a trial and error to see what oil works best for you though.
My truck HATES 5w-30, even in the winter time.
