Just swap the locking diff, it's not ghetto rigging anything, its putting parts on a drivetrain that was made for it.

Living at elevation in CO I can tell you, I NEED a 4.6, but currently have a 4.0 2001. When this dies (if I ever let it) I'm going for an 03-04 for the extra power. At the basic elevation I live at, it is down over 20% on power from stock. Going over a mountain pass at 12000 feet...now you're down almost 40% on power, so I need all the power I can get.
That being said my 01 keeps on chugging along with only peripheral failures, not internal engine problems.

03 And 04 had the C grade 4.6
The A and B grade 4.6 went in the Range Rovers.
The 4.6 is simply a 4.0 with a different crank and rods.
The C grade 4.6's of 03/04 apparently had alot of bad castings, as in one side of a water jacket was thick and sturdy, and the other was thin and weak. Overheating caused cracks in the weak spots and caused coolant to seap out between the block and steel cylinder sleeve(s), mimmicing a blown head gasket.
I have an 04, did a full rebuild last year(bad bearings), pressure tested block and coolant system sucessfully prior to disassembly. When attemping to start the rebuilt engine...coolant in 3 cylinders.
A small amount, but apparently after a completely new coolant system, that became the weak spot, yay.
I just got a good 4.0 short block this past saturday, and will transfer the new guts of my 4.6, plus it's crank and rods into the 4.0, making it a 4.6
Also, some earlier model D2's Did have a factory cdl.
No 03's did, although some 03's just need the cdl linkage to work, others do not have the shaft coming out of the case to attach the linkage to.

That, or a 4.0 and swap in the 4.6 crank and rods, which is what I'm doing now.
I got a good 4.0 short block last saturday after a P38 4.6 block deal fell through.

The 4.6L vs 4.0L HP wise = small really. 217HP vs 188/190HP. It’s the extra 50ft-lb’s of torque which helps. No LR with any variant of the Buick 215 V8 is a power house.
In the mountains staying out of 4th gear and not being weighed down will help, but it’s not gonna win any Pikes Peak races.
If you want HP & performance ditch the old Rover V8 for an LS 4.8/5.3L and get the kit from Trailhead 4x4. Keeps it fully operating with the OEM sensors/equipment. You can get an all aluminum 5.3L (not sure about the 4.8L).
Also if you have a 99-02 with the HP22 it would be a good time to slap in an HP24 to handle the extra HP with the swap.
