Default caliper replacement in pairs?

So my Left rear caliper piston appears to be stuck. I see the brake smoking after a short drive!

I've heard and read different opinions about replacing calipers in pairs. I thought that since it's the rear brake it might not be critical that I replace both calipers, but I know the ABS system on these cars are pretty sensitive. Have any of you had experience either way (replacing one or both?)

Thanks

I just replaced drivers front caliper on my DI. No ill effects from replacing only one side,
Then again, its a DI with the ABS fuse pulled.

If that brake got real hot, I would give some thought to greasing that bearing while your in there..

Rotors as I understand should be replaced in pairs

If your brake got hot enough to smoke then you probably did damage to the rotor. If it doesn't need replaced right now I would think the rotor will need to be replaced shortly. The rotors start out thin so it doesn't take much to wear them down or warp them. Replacing rotor does have to be done in pairs, just like brake pads. I am pretty sure you will be fine replacing just one caliper. You may want to pull the caliper and see if you can rebuild it before you lay out the money for a replacement caliper.

You won't/shouldn't experience any pull by only replacing one on the rear. If it were the front you would want to replace both.

It was only $70 for a remanufactured front caliper for my DI. Well worth not rebuilding it myself..

thanks for the feedback. I got the part from Atlantic British already, so I'll go ahead and replace that one only and see what happens!

BTW, does anyone have a good technique to remove those lug nuts that have been over-tightened by a tire shop???
