Hi Folks,

My 2003 Disco just up and died, it was fine one second and then in a drive thru it stalled, kinda odd, I re-started it and it hicupped on the way home.

The next day went out started it got 200 yds from home and it started to sputter and I pulled over and it died.

I re-started it and drove it back home. I got a scan tool and pulled 17 codes out of it. I just erased them all and re-started it. It ran (sounding odd) for about 30 seconds and sputtered and died.

Here's the code list:

So these can't be good, does anyone have a suggestion where to start?
The O2 sensors are about a year old. There has alwasy been a bad code with Sec Air Unit (P1415) but other than that it's been fine and runs well. I did change out the plug wires to a nicor .8 type here 6 years ago too.

Any help or a suggestion where to start would be great.

You could start by running them against the list of codes in the attached link as many may also be similar or duplicates. It'll take you awhile to check them all and mark them off.

Get a pack of 'tinnies' in first though as you're gonna be there quite awhile.

 

Did you by chance wash your engine bay or go through some deep water recently?

Also your item #6 says P1300...not sure that is a correct code number.

I had a scare like that once... the main harness t clamp on the firewall above the motor had rubbed a few wires bare and was causing shorts and fuses to pop... the maf, o2s, sai all had trouble codes out of the blue, they are all running into that t clamp area. its roughtly above the pass. side front o2, just follow the wire up. the other one to check is the wires that run from the maf down a channel above the intake manifold area to the back of the motor, think the iac wires and pass o2 wires meet up in that wire loom too.

open the plastic t clamp, open the plastic guard looms and take a look at the wire conditions, might have multiple rubbed through spots that are rubbing on each other. i just jumbled the wires around abit, left the tclamp open and cleaned out some grit that was in the harness.... cleared the codes, repalced the fuses and all has been well for 2+ years.

 

mine gets like that, sometimes, after a car wash. btw- did not see that you replaced the MAF sensor, some of those codes may be MAF related. or not! ain't Disco ownership grand!? my experience as a shade-tree mechanic has been that when things look overwhelmingly complicated, it's usually pretty simple. like a bad ground, or going through a car wash. good luck with it, hope this helps...

"I was thinking" (<---- that can't be good) I have already put in two new O2 sensors and I think I'll buy two more and swap em out. In thinking about it again, it is displaying the same symptoms it did before when they went bad.

I wanted to ask you guys, if my disco is constanly having problems with the secondary air unit P1415 would that, over time, (9 months?) gum up two new sensors again?

I have a feeling its the MAF or something like that but they might be gunked up again ... I have no idea .... but does that sound right??!

I'm also going to go look for shorts and check that main harness clamp too! Would you guys say it's safe to assume that all the mis-fire codes are just a problem because of the P0103 and p0174 codes? I really can't see 4 cyls going bad at the same time.

well 4 cyclinders could go bad if a coil takes a shi+ but its far to complicated for me to scan those codes on my android phone to see if all those are on the same coil. still sounds like electrical/connection issues to me. what do you long and short term fuel trim values look like?
