RE: Can someone please explain he diff. lock....
After I engage the CDL the truck needs to roll about 20ft. for the light to on. I didn't figure this out until I was on the trail using it. When I first tested it after installing the '04 linkage I just engaged it sitting in the garage and the light didn't come on.

You have five places the diff lock can go.
1. High unlock-backright road use.
2. Low unlock-forward right road use slow <30mph.
3. High locked-back left off road/loose/low traction snow ect
4. Low locked-forward left off road max traction needed.
5. center Neutral- out of gear no go.

Number one.
All the way back and to the right= normal dry or wet roads.
All the way back and to the left=snow covered roads/wet sloppy dirt roads
All the way forward and to the right=pulling the boat out of the water
All the way forward and to the left=steep muddy hills, deep snow, off road moderate to difficult trails
All the way forward, left or right is low gear, below 30mph
All the way back, left or right is high gear, anyspeed

No driving with the light on will not hurt anything as long as the problem has been corrected.
Same with the fuel economy. If it is on because of bad spark plugs then yes, it will hurt something and cause bad MPG.
So the first thing you need to do is reset the light and see if it comes back on. Then read the codes and see why it is on.

RE: Can someone please explain he diff. lock....
I just drove the truck again. This time in 4wd high. A problem though....first time I drove it in low fine (forward to the right), then I try driving in High (back to the right) and I try to start going and it is surging like it is not really in gear but I put it all the way into gear. Any suggestions
