Default Can't shift into L...

2002 DII 128K

Can't shift into L, shifter will move but feels jammed or stuck. Solenoid? Easy fix?

Someone have a 2004 transfer case they want to "give" me?

I am not 100% sure on this one but I will give it a try. If I am wrong someone will call me out right away. Your shift linkage is probably frozen from not being used often enough. You have to get under the truck and grease it and play with it for a while. I read once on this forum that you should shift it into L every once in a while to prevent it from freezing.

x2 on what buick215 said.

I'd try soaking the linkage in PB Blaster from under the truck...including the cable that runs from the shifter to the transfer case. The cable is a solid metal shaft that runs through a plastic/rubber/braided metal jacket, so I would image that if it isn't lubed, this could be a big part of the issue too.

The D1 mechanical shifter would freeze because of gunk that built up on it, but the D2 shifter has a cable shifter and it's not likely to have the same problem.
My shifter needs a hefty tug to go from H to L or L to H, it shifts easier if the vehicle is moving slowly.

I do this enough, should never have a problem with mine, although I'm not usually under the truck.

The problem is not the linkage, it is the shift solenoid, on top of the tranny, that has failed. You can either replace it with a new one or remove it all together.

Thanks Mike, that is what I had feared. This little guy right?

When you say remove it, does that mean bypassing it? Or by removing it do I lose 4 Lo?

Yes, now you don't have to replace it, just need to remember not to shift the t/case while in drive. I took mine out years ago and have had no problems.
Look for the square plate on top of the tranny, held down by 4 bolts.
