Default Catalytic Converter, ABS, TC Indicator Lights

I have to have a new catalytic converter ($800 parts and labor). This is not through a dealership. I was informed that I can have a universal part welded on for $250 at a muffler shop. Is that a bad idea?

Would a universal part welded on cause the check engine light to come on? Would I need to replace the sensors? I have heard I may have this problem

I also have the ABS, TC and Hill Decent indicator lights coming on. Any idea what that could be?

Thanks

What year and mileage? If you are under 8/80, it is under dealer warranty for a cat. If not, go to Magnaflow and find an aftermarket dealer in your area. I got 2 Magnaflow high flow cats installed for $325.

Go to an Autozone or similar parts store and get your codes read. Write them down and post back here. Then we can tell you what might be causing your light to come on.

The 3 lights are known as the 3 amigos. Do a search and find out more info on it. You should have the codes read by a small rover shop and cleared. This will sometimes correct the problem. If it comes back, have them read again, and it will tell you where to start.

Please note that the ABS codes can not be read by the same scanner as the check engine light. The CEL can be read by almost any scanner, but you have to have a Rover scanner for ABS fault codes...

Yeah, if you go high-flow you need to do both at once. If you can get smaller outside dimensions than stock you can also save some headaches later if you do any crazy suspension tricks.

It has 86,000 miles on it. Just my luck! I'll have the codes read and get back with you. Thanks for the help.

Why do you think your cat has failed? Did you get a fault code, if so which one?

Mike,

I just got back from a muffler shop. I wanted a second opinion. I turns out it's not the catalytic converter at all but two loose bolts on my muffler that was causing the noise. They told me the other shop probably just assumed it was the converter because of the noise. Since he tightend up the bolts the noise is gone!

The same muffler shop also told me they noticed brake fluild leaking on my left rear axle. He told me the seal needed to be replaced but that I would have to have the entire bearing assembley replaced because it comes as one part, you can't just repalce the seal anymore. Is this true? He said it would cost $710 with parts and labor.

So, there are 2 things that will leak back there, gear oil thru the internal hub seal and brake fluid from the caliper. Time you or another mechanic rechecks it cause brake fluid won't leak from the hub.
Get back to us. By the way, if it is the hub, I know where you ca buy good guaranteed used ones cheap.

Mike,

I had to break down and take my truck to a LR dealer to have the codes read. I didn't mention anything about the feedback I received from the muffler shop regarding the left rear hub. After a $170 diagnostic test I was told the following was causing my 3 amigo lights to go off:

86788 Fault for erratic signal rom the R/F ABS sensor ABS diagnostics... hookupt/4 access ABS ECM for fault codes.. Found 1 fault code stored.. 8,4-R/F sensor signal erratic..R/F hub assembly has debris floating in it causing the sensor to send erratic signals.. Cleared ABS faults.

After the service manager told me the above, I mentioned the L/R issue and they determined it was leaking fluid and the hub will need to be replaced. Cost of $645 because I already had the diagnostic test done.

I just drove about 15 miles back to my office and the lights are still off. I would imagine they will come back on at some point.

What would you recommend I do at this point????

The leaking hub was discovered at the muffler shop on the left rear. The erratic senor was coming from the right front according to the dealership. The dealer said the right front was causing the 3 lights to go off.

I also have 20% of my break pads left and my rear rotors need to be replaced. What is the best brand to use forboth? I just had my rear rotorson the front and rear along with the brakes less than 15K ago. My brotherdid the work for me. Both thedealer and the shop that did my state inspection told me they were bad when they read themwiththeir calipers. Whatmanufacturer is bestto use to replace both?
