I have a set of these pliers and have never had an issue with the fan. I just slip them on the nut, bump it to the left and the fan just spins right off.
My had to remove the fan from my 99 Disco. After 16 years it was so tight I had to cut the blades off with a saw in order to get at the nut. It was so tight I needed a 24" extension on the wrench to move it. Lot's of cussing.. Also on the hose removal. In order to get at the water pump hose clamp I needed to get underneath and drain the oil and remove the oil filter to get at the hose clamp..Lot O Cussen...I ended up cutting the hose to remove the clamp...
To replace the hoses you don't need to remove the fan but it's very tight to get the hose clamps, get the special tool from any auto store to remove those clamps it's worth it..

so i got the old hose off and this new one on(had to remove the idler pulley and use a knife blade to cut the hose off). that plastic piece sure does make this hose hard to install. so i found it easiest to start by putting the hose on the water pump first, then twist it back behind the A/C line to plug the heater core hose part on, then i was able to tighten down the hose clamps on the water pump and the heater core line.
question, i have the fan and fan shroud out of the way, would now be a good time to blow compressed air from the back of the radiator to the front to try and clean it a bit?
went and picked the tool up today, $18, but deff made removing the fan easy. so installing the fan again, how tight? when the engine is running, is it turning in a direction that's tightening or loosening?

Tightening. Once belt is back on I just whack the wrench a couple times with a dead blow hammer. It's not going anywhere and easy to remove the next time with a whack or two.
