Default Cheap Fix For Oxidized Paint On Hood

Hi,

Just wanted to see what you guys and gals think about an idea I'm having. I just bought this Rover about a month ago and the paint is in excellent shape except for right in the center of the hood it is very oxidized. I took it to a body shop and they want $400.00 to repaint it (the clearcoat is too thin now for any buffing).

I've seen the Disco's with the center of the hood done in black... I think it's a decal on the ones I've seen. I'm thinking about just masking around the body line of the hood and painting the center flat or semi gloss black. Originally I thought about rhino lining it but I think it would look funny (too much texture). Rhino lining it would be sweet cause you could set a cooler up there, or your guns and ammo when you go shooting, you could use it as a workbench when you're in the mountains, etc. I just don't know if I'm prepared to ruin this hood with Rhino Lining to try it out.

So... what do you think? Tape it off and paint is semi gloss black, or send it to the body shop to the tune of $400.00??

Rethink the Rhino lining, I can't think of a worse thing to do to a hood.
Put a hood decal on and add a little class in the process.

Yeah the Rhinolining idea didn't last long. Where can I get a decal and how much $$ are we talking? I've seen them, they look good.

Sometime I see them on E-Bay for around $70 or more, might do a web search under hood decals. I have also heard of people going down to their local print shops and having them made from 3M material.

I think Rover parts has them. The Camel Trophy vehicles do it to reduce glare.

The local autotrim store here wants around $130 for the decal with install (and that is with two seams down the middle). Found one on eBay... starting bid 59.99. Does anyone else know where I might find one of these and has anyone done the install themselves? If so... any tips? I don't want to end up with air bubbles all over it.

If the clear is gone, the only option is to wet sand the hood, and spray it in clear, wet sand again, then polish to a new finish...
