Cheap Roof Top Tent

Cheap Roof Top Tent
Seems there is no such thing. Trek Overland and other websites want thousands $,$$$. I believe you can make this very easy ,.. if you can find the folding aluminum base. Does anyone know where you can get a folding base from or something unrelated that would function similar ? All you need is Aluminum on plastic and you can drill the rest yourself. Rivets, hooks, U-bolts. I'm not spending $2000-$3000 on a tent you can buy online for $300 or less.

check this guys build out. He has built two wedge tents himself and his plans are free online. I know we don't have a truck bed to deal with but it shouldn't be too hard to just make it a simple wedge tent ala Go Fast Campers style.

I would ask what you are looking for in an RTT even in Canada you can do better than that.
I wanted low weight and I am a solo guy so I choose to spend more about 1200.00 US. Lighter tends to cost more
But you can go cheaper than that pretty easy although shipping hurts
At OverlandRec up here you can get a 4 person soft shell for about 1050 US before shipping https://overlandrec.com/collections/...-roof-top-tent
There are 2 or 3 vendors in BC with similar prices
Check Craigslist as well

I have a roof top tent outlet nearby. They sell the displays and returns with minor blemishes only (no defects) for half the price on a Saturday at the end of the camping season (autumn).

I have the Smittybilt Overlander Tent. I bought it for around $800 on a sale. It's the cheapest one I could find at the time. It's been a good tent -- probably done 30 nights or so in it and it hasn't had any major issues. Mattress is comfortable for two. Fabric and zippers have held up. The one thing that has fallen apart a bit is the cover -- which has taken a beating in the sun and developed a few small holes.

We have a Tepui Autana 3 we got at a steal for $600 at an REI garage sale. As we talked to the sales person it appears that lots of people get one when the weather starts to get nice but only really get one summer's use from it before discovering "it doesn't fit their lifestyle." Your best chance might be waiting until fall for a "cheap" one. We ran ours on a late model Subaru Forester, I practically bought the D2 as a camping rig so the tent wouldn't be on my daily driver!
