Default Checking Oil Pressure

Got a few questions before I check the oil pressure on my DII.

First off. I'm not installing an oil pressure gauge. I'm merely checking the pressure with a gauge from Harbor Freight. So I'm unplugging the multi plug on the pressure sending switch and then taking out the bolt for an adapter to hook the gauge up.

My questions are. With the sending switch out and the gauge in it's place. Will the oil pressure light in the dash illuminate? Or no. That would freak me out.

Secondly. What are the numbers I am looking for? I know I should be checking cold idle and cold 2000 rpms. Then check for warm idle which I assume just means restart the truck after you've ran the first time and check the pressure again at 2000 rpm?

Bump.

Well I'm about to head off to work. If I could get a few responses in the next few hours I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Guys I know it's a simple test but I haven't done this before and would appreciate a walk through if someone has the time.

I see a lot of people installing gauges and sandwich adapters but I haven't seen anyone post about temporary testing.

Will the oil pressure light come on while Im doing the test?

Since I'll be taking out the sending pressure switch to put the pressure gauge on?

Your oil light should light up if the sending unit is off. To check this out, before you do anything unhook the sending unit, and start it up. Light should come on. I don't think it will have any detrimental effect, since you will still have pressure, just not showing up on the instrument panel. If this is a problem, maybe you could put a tee in there and hook up both the gauge and the sending unit.

I would install gauge, start it up, record the pressure, let it warm up and check the pressure at different rpm readings and record the results. then post the readings.

Thanks for the advice Joemamma.

I managed to get the oil pressure sensor out. However none of the adapters that came with my pressure gauge match the thread size of the one on the sensor. Anyone know what size it is?

Could I match it at a hardware store?

Take the sensor and gauge to hardware store, matching up should not be a problem. A hydraulic store, if hardware store can't help.

Hey yeah I just went to Oreillys, Lowes, and Napa and they didn't have anything to match the size. It's 12x1.5

Seems like this might work.

Earl's AN to Metric Thread Adapter Fittings - Free Shipping on All Orders @ JEGS

Either of these?

Not sure what the -4AN or -6AN mean exactly. Should I be able to find a standard adapter to fit those rather easily?
