Default Clicking noise

Have a 2004 Disco about 71k miles on it, just bought it changed all fluids, sparkplugs, put in a K&N Air Filter, fixed a few coolant hoses. Runs great no leaks but there is a annoying clicking noise coming from the front of the left valve cover (when I am sitting in the drivers seat). It comes and goes but at idle it starts clicking, when I put a little load on the engine, revs or start to take off in drive the clicking goes away. Sometimes it stays away for a while but it always comes back.

Is this a rocker or a lifter?? Is that a big deal to repair?

Any advise please.

Check your oil pressure.

What weight of oil are you running? Synthetic? What part of the US are you in?

I lightened my oil weight with a full synthetic and it went away. Others have gone heavier with a high detergent diesel oil.

The rocker shafts are prone to clogging if it wasn't changed regularly.. Don't go over 5K. You can dis-assemble the shaft and clean it, but bottom line is pressure isn't getting there for some reason. It is common with these heads.

Default Clicking

Thanks for the info..

I just got the vehicle so I drained old oil put 10W30 Castrol Synthetic in it plus a bit of marvel mystery oil to clean it up a bit. Thought I would run this for one or two thousand miles then drain and re fill with 10W40. Perhaps it will be cleaned out. I live in Southern California.

If not I will probably have to clean up top half of the heads. The previous owner probably did not change the oil often enough. It has never been off road it seems to be in excellent shape.

Off topic, but I would toss the K&N filter out for a dry filter. The oils from the K&N kills the MAF - which is about $200+ to replace.

I have the same issue. 2003 with 55K. My mech said it needs a douche' with kerosine and then 100% synthetic. He says if this will not work the valve needs to be bored? I'm in San Francisco, but the car is from L.A.

Default Update.

My mechanic did the kerosine flush and I am now running synthetic. It did very little! The CLACK - CLACK - CLACK is still loud enough to cause concern. He says to put 1000 on it and see if that helps. Any thoughts or ideas?

STOP DRIVING THE TRUCK and have it towed to a different mechanic.
Have your oil pressure tested, '03's have bad oil pumps and are prone to failure causing the engine to grenade.

OK...My mech did an oil pressure test. All is good. Now what? Given the fact that my Rover is in this VIN range is engine failure a certainty? I really wish I would have done some research before I plunked down almost 10K. Any other advice or is this truck just doomed?

BTW. This is a clack that comes and goes.

What does all is good mean, get the 4 exact pressure reading and get back to us.
If in the oil pressure is good, then it is time to tear down the top of the engine and inspect the rocker shafts, arms, lifters, push rods and cam lopes for wear.
