I have a 1995 Discovery with a 5 spd that I purchased about one month ago. I hear an intermittent clicking sound that is easiest to reproduce by pressing the accelerator at low speed and then letting it off suddenly (vehicle jolts). Sometimes occurs when engaging or disengaging the clutch. It seems to occur also while encountering bumps in the road. The noise does not seem to be related to steering as I have tried turning and circling left and right at various speeds with no noise resulting. I hear this intermittent sound from a few mph up to 40-50 mph. The sound may not go away at higher speed, there may just be too much ambient noise. I have no other symptoms. Axle oil, transfer case oil, ATF in the gearbox and driveshaft grease renewed in the last two weeks.

Any assistance on how to locate the source of this clicking is very much appreciated.

 

Can you tell approx where the sound is coming from? Could be driveshaft u-joints or more likely a problem with the clutch disk (worn or broken disk, worn springs). May be time for a new clutch.

 

U-joints and possibly a cv-joint as a second idea.

How mechanical are you?

 

Are the catalytic converters original? You might get a tick from old CATs.

 

I am mechanically inclined (no formal training), and have the rave CD.

I don't have a record showing new cats. How would I verify whether the sound was from them?

 

You don't need new cats, they are not causing your clicking.
Hope you are ready to get busey with bringing your new truck up to speed.
All of these items listed below, need to be done, maybe not because of high mileage but because the truck is old with low mileage and fluids build up acids.

This is the parts list for a 60,000 mile service or a high mileage used truck, the way I do it.
1 Oil filter, K&N 3001 or Mobil 1
1 Air filter
6 Qts of engine oil
12 Qts of ATF
7 Qts of 80/90W synthetic gear oil
1 Qt of synthetic Brake fluid
2 Qts of synthetic Power steering fluid
2 Gallons of OAT, orange coolant
1 Bottle of Lucas Power Steering additive
1 Bottle of Lucas Transmission additive
1 Can of Spray Carb. Spray
1 Can Of Brake cleaner
8 Spark Plugs, I use Bosch Platium Plus 4's
1 Set of Magnacor 8mm plug wires
1 Serpentine belt
2 Bottles of SeaFoam gas additive
1 T/Stat


60,000 Mile Service or Major Service for High Mileage Used Vehicle just purchased

Bleed the brakes
Flush and change the power steering fluid adding one bottle of additive
Service the tranny adding one bottle of additive
Change the coolant and t/stat
Do an engine flush before changing the oil
Do an induction cleaning
Clean the throttle body
Add fuel additive to full gas tank
Change both of the diffs fluid
Change the t/case oil
Replace the plugs and wires
Replace the air filter
Lube all the drive shaft grease fitting including the 2 slip shafts
Do full inspection of brakes, hoses, bushings etc.

Hopefully I didn't leave anything out.

1 Clean the throttle body (did plenum cleaning, and will do this one too)
2 Do full inspection of brakes, hoses, bushings etc. (Don't think I misssed anything here, but will have LR shop take a look with an experienced eye)

Notwithstanding these four items, is there a method for verifying u-joints or a cv is the problem?

 

This noise I am still chasing, and just can't leave alone, on my 95 Discovery 5 speed with 130k, only occurs after driving and warming things up. After taking a drive I spun the driveshafts and moved them fore and aft. I didn't produce any noise from the u-joints and didn't see or feel any play in them.

However, my two findings were:
1. There was clicking in the transfer case that I believe to be the source of the problem. In your opinion(s) is this something to worry about? Add Lucas oil conditioner?? Or just keep an eye and ear on it?

2. The front driveshaft had about half an inch of rotational play. When I spun it and then stopped it, it seemed like there was something inside of it that spun that extra half inch. Any need for concern with this?
