..:: The Clunking Noise When Turning Situation ::..
Hello Roverers,
Been hearing a clunking noise when turning to either left or right at low speed, accompanied by a gentle jerking of my 2002 Disco S2 (164355). Heard and felt it first when coming into my driveway, since I have to make a 90° turn to enter, now I'm starting to hear/feel it at less angled turns. I also feel the jerk when stopping at a light or sign, is less, but is there.
Upper & Lower Ball-Joints are original and very deteriorated, but did not have play last time I checked. Sometimes the jerk is literally felt underneath the front seats, as if coming from transfer case, but do not hear anything odd, except when turning at low speed.
Any feedback will be of help, now that the weekend is upon us and there might be time to crawl downunder, thanks! ;-]#

any clunks when going over bumps? have you done a good inspection of all suspension/driveline components other than ball joints? I just got done replacing mine because of the deteriorated boots. Sometimes the joints can appear to have no play but still be bad due to age. I ordered the moog ball joints from RockAuto and have been satisfied thus far. Look for anything rubbing or showing signs of failing.

One of my tie rod ends was completely falling apart and it never made a sound, instead it just slopped all over the place. If they're as bad as you're describing I would replace both the drag link and the tie rod though. It's a relatively simple task requiring only a couple of sockets and possibly a joint splitter.
...thanks USAF_DISCO. No, noises so far when driving over bumps, just when turning either way. Yes, all joints do look very deteriorated and should/must change, but do not have play when truck was lifted, and I was also looking at those Moog brand for replacement. Also, all rubber protectors on both bars below (think they are called "Steering Drag Link & Track Tie Rod End Bars"), are very deteriorated as well, and I can rock them back and forth easily . Would these parts conditions originate the clunking noise? noise is like some metal part gets pulled and then let go, like those stoppers on a metal gear maybe?
yes if anything steering related has bad bushings it can cause noise or clunks when turning. Basically the components can rock in the mount can cause noise. I had an f250 with bad bushings in the track bar and it caused a clunk when turning. You shouldn't be able to rock anything back and forth with ease.

Hi Guys!
Finally went to my mechanic today to pinpoint where the clunking noises were coming from, and after some driving he is certain it is the chain inside the T-Case, should be extended/loose, but the same noise I hear when turning, is the one I hear when I put my truck in "R". I'm also feeling the jerk/pull when driving and if I lift my foot from the pedal it does it very soft, but once I press the pedal it picks up again. It also happens after driving a while, so it comes alive when warm/hot, and it is actually felt under the seat, not on the wheel.
He also checked the Upper & Lower Ball Joints, as well as the both bars, and yes all rubber is gone, and they do look pretty deteriorated, but are not the ones causing the noise, I should change them, but will not make the noise go away.
He suggests that if I want I could drain and refill with new fluid, and see how it reacts after that, otherwise he suggests going to a junkyard and get one from any similar truck there, shouldn't be more than $200 from what I asked at a place I stopped by, or get a new one or try to repair the actual one; but he prefers that I get one from a junkyard first.
Any of you guys know if any year Disco T-Case would work? mine is a 2002 Disco S2 SE.
Your feedback will be very much appreciated, thanks!

As for the clunking when turning, it sounds like a steering problem, could be power steering box, drag link or track rod ends or upper/lower swivel ball joints. It may even be one of the CV joints in the front halfshafts.
IMO it is worth locating a good Landrover mechanic as has been suggested.
X1 ................. D2 transfer cases are LT230 and are all gear driven and no chains.

Thing is that the clunk is felt underneath the seats; you don't feel it during first miles, but after driving a while. It's always there when turning into a parking space, wnen you have to turn the wheel a lot. On straight lines you also feel it, as if driving over seams on the pavement, intensity differs. Nothing is felt on the steering wheel.
It does not happen when you turn the wheel while parked, truck has to be rolling. I put a camera below and recorded all ball joints and no movement when turning the wheels, while parked, also both bars. Again rubbers are gone in these. CV boots are intact, would need to remove them to see inside.
Gotta take care of this soon cuz I fear something will break or lock up. Something somewhere is definitely not properly working, pulling, holding and then letting go producing the jerk and clunk noise.
I will drain the transfer case fluid and refill, this is something I should had done when I did the diffs, since I have never replaced it, and dunno oif previous owner did.
As per the LR mechanic, lets see what I can find around here. Thanks guys!
