Default Codes P0204 and P0300?

Guys,
My wife started our02 DiscoII up yesterday to head home from work and a steady Service Engine Light came on. She gave me a call about it and said the engine"may" have ran rough for a couple moments when she first started it but it then smoothed out as she headed down the road. I've trained her to monitor the engine temperature and she reported it was fine so I had her finish the drive home. I ran over to Auto Zone this morning for the OBD2 scan and it is showing P0300 (random misfire) and P0204 (#4 Fuel injector circuit condition). P0300 seems to be a very common code but I haven't seen any post's regarding a P0204 code in this forum. I've made an appointment with my indy mechanic but thought I'd throw this out for your opinion on the possible cause. I'm thinking bad/plugged fuel injector but what do I Know? FYI, I replaced plugs and wires at 60k and the truck seems to be driveing fine now.

Thanks,
Martin

First off, it is so unusual for a D2 injector to act up, it is nearly unheard of. Before you go to afr with parts, buy a can of B&G 44k from a Napa store and drive it, as long as it is not running real bad, and see if it will clear out the injector. The other option is to have the injectors servived/cleaned. If this doesn't work and the connection to the injector is secure then you will need to replace that injector.
Atlantic British has a pretty good price on them.

Thanks for your response Mike. Considering the rarity of injector problems I guess I should feel special!

Although I just ran a can of Seafoam through the tank last month I'll try the B&G 44K too. I will also eyeball the connections on the injector as advised for any apparent problems.

Couple more questions if you don't mind:

- So, you're saying this problem is something I can drive on for the short term. Shouldn't cause any O2 sensor or Cat problems while I sort it out?

- Are you familiar with the B&G servicesoffered at some shops? I see a few around here that offer them, I'm not sure what they charge or if the procedures are worthwhile. Any comments?

- Lastly, what is my best alternative to turn off the Service Engine Light (SEL)? Will it cycle off by itself eventually if the injector clears? I understand Auto Zone etc. will do it if they're feeling nice that day. Will any of the cheaper, home shop type code readers turn off the SEL on a Disco II? I've read conflicting info in other forum post's. I intend to keep my Disco forever so I wouldn't mind investing a reasonable mount of money in a reader if it will switch the SEL off.

Thanks for being such a big help, will let you know how it works out. Hopefully the B&G 44K works and
I won't have to break out my RAVE disc for the injector swap.

I can't tell you how much driving the engine will take, that depends on what the injector is doing, and yes it could cause the cat on the passanger side to heat up and possible damage.
Yes, I am very familar with the B&G services and how they work, they are good, probably the best on the market, a little expensive but worth while.
You can not turn off the check engine light till the problem is fixed and it won't go off by itself, you'll need to have some one with a scqanner shut it off.
Find a mechanic who know how to electronicly check the injectors function and get it over worth.

No B&G 44K to be found around here, not even at NAPA. I threw a bottle of Techron in it as abest alternative. Since my Disco seems to be running perfectly I'll run that through it for a few miles and then have the SEL reset, If the light returns I'll take it to My indy Land Rover/BMW shop next week for proper testing, cleaning, whatever. Nice guys over there but I was hoping my next visit would wait till the 90K service.

While picking upthe Techron I asked my Auto-Zone guy ifhe would reset theSELin a couple daysand he said no problem since he knows I'm trouble shooting. He said they normally don't do resets becausesome people ask just so they can get their vehicles thru the state inspection, which they can't do with the SEL lighton. Will let you know what turns up.

Thanks Again Mike

Well, I took the truck to Home Depot this morning and on the way home my SES light went out! Truck is running just fine so - knock on wood- let's hope my fuel injector issue was caused by something transient. This is a good thing because them fuel injectors aren't exactly hanging out there where they're easy to replace. I figure 400-500 bucks to relace a defective one (if $$ for replacing my plug wiresis any indication).Hopefully I dodged the bullet this time. Thanks for your helpMike.

After running fine for a week my Disco started missing again so I took it to my indy shop. The verdict? A loose injector wire connector. My mechanic thought he had probably not reconnected it properlywhen hereplaced my plug wires a year ago so, no charge! The guy had even washed my truck! Just wanted to remind everyone there arestillmechanics out there who do good work and stand behind it.

Is there a site where you can find indy reapair shops for land rovers? I would rather bring my LR there instead of a stealership. Thanks

It is good to hear of a shop, be it dealer or independent that will do what needs to be done to take care of a customer.

As for a shop, no, there are no lists, what city do you live in or near?

OxyCo,

Looks like you're close to Baton Rouge. I would call the stealership there in Baton Rouge and ask where they recommend you go to get work done that's not covered under your warranty. Even if you don't have a warranty. They should point you in the right direction, if they are nice.

I actually called a buddy that had a BMW and asked where he took his for work. It was a european auto only shop. Great work and they charge $75 per hour. About $30 less than the dealer shop.
