Cold start clatter, whats normal?

Just wondering how much noise is normal on cold startup? When I start my '03 in the morning after it has sat all night it seems to make a lot of top end clatter for about 30 sec or so. When starting it warm or if it has been started recently it doesnt make any noise at all. The oil light goes out instantly upon startup maybe .5-1 sec. Im running rotella synthetic 5w-40 and the mobil 1 301 filter. And air temp doesnt seem to be much of a factor, seems about the same noise cold air or not. It seems more a product of sitting all night. Any thoughts? Do I need a heavier oil?

I'd second Texmbr's recommendation of an oil press gauge since you've got an '03 and the fact that you're noticing that oil light staying on after startup, even if it's just a fraction of a second longer than the normal 'warning light check'.

Maybe IM just being too paranoid about this, I crawled under my toyota and pathfinder and they make noises to. It just seems the landrover is louder, maybe like a faint rattle mixed in, with kind of a chug, chug kind of a underlieing noise. This rover is going to drive me crazy maybe I should just sell it, listening for every little noise or some deviation from normal is really wearing on me.

LOL. Just take the dang thing off road for a little while and all the paranoia will fade away, and you'll never want to sell it.....if only for a little while

I do have to question why everyone uses the "wrong" filter for the truck. That is not the one recommended by M1 or anyone else. I looked at the two side by side, and made a few calls. Everything came back the same, "If it was better to use the different filter than M1 and others would recommend it." The two do have different patterns, and bigger is not always better. I'm in no way saying it is bad...just that I go with what is called for.

I had two seperate mechanics have a listen to the rover, and they both said all the noises they heard were normal, with just a touch of valvetrain noise which seemed normal for a pushrod v8 with 102k miles on it. Also one said some of the chug, chug type noise might be from to low of an idle. When warm it idles down around 400 rpm, if you rev it to around 750 I no longer hear any noise.
