So my SAI pump is howling louder than a 747 and I found this thread just now. I believe after reading this I will get either a used or rebuilt unit. But for those with enough time, patience, and ability to rebuild themselves this is awesome!

I took my sai pump to bits with the intention of maybe replacing the bearings.

There is a point in the strip down that needs a very specific puller manufacturing which I wasn't able to do with a reasonably extensive set of tools. A small lathe would make it possible to make the needed part, but with average hand tools, drills, vice, welder etc I couldn't see a way.

Would love it if someone managed it as that unit seems liable to howling on a lot of vehicles. And they arnt cheap to replace.

There is a seller on eBay that is making/ selling refurbished sai pumps. He even sends a prepaid label to send your old unit back. I went this route after wasting money on a salvaged unit. Money well spent. New pump was so quiet on first start up I thought it wasn't working.

I tried the rebuild. Couldn't get it completely apart without manufacturing a puller. Finally found a rebuilt one with a 2 year warranty.

I know this is a very old thread. But here is a bit more info. I just complete the repair, the pump is almost the same as the volvo unit. However it only has one bearing on the non-electrical end of the motor. Where he manufactures a puller here I used a simple 2-jaw puller that I ground off to fit in the small lip, the rest is the same as he shows. It took about 1.5hr total so it was very much worth it I think. The bearing is a 626 and it costs $13. Beats a new pump.
