The 4.6 was introduced in 2000? Not 2003.
The oil pump problem is because of bad quality control during certain manufacture dates. When the oil pump fails the engine dosnt overheat, it loses oil pressure which is the same as running it without oil in the engine.
The 4.6 is a good engine, the engine design has been around for 40+ years, just one year (2003)where quality was sub par in the engine build area.
The replacement engine should be void of defects and should last you well into the 200K range with little to no problems.
The 4.6 Bosch as used in the Discovery was introduced in 2003. It is just a stroked 4.0. The block design basics have been around for 40+ years. That's it.

Right, you beat me to it! The 4.6 was not around until 2003. If you can find a 2000 with a 4.6 in it then they have done some major modifications to it. LR used a very common engine set up that was not really messed with until they did some things in 03. If you tried to upgrade to 4.6 then you would have to change some things to handle to load of the new 4.6.

For you guys who are in the range of the given VIN, go check and see if yours has been fixed if you dont know. Its very important that you do because if that pump fails you are in big trouble. I forgot who said it but if your dealer said "its news to them" they ought to be yelled at, that was one of the biggest problems for LR in 03-04, it even made the NATIONAL NEWS! Maybe they have been sleeping since 03 but someone needs to knock some sense into them. GEEEEZ some LR dealers are disgraceful.

OK, OK, so I was wrong. The 4.6 wasnt introduced until '03.
I swear that some of the '01's and '02's I was looking at before I bought my '97 had the 4.6. Now I am puzzled.

Thats ok, it happens! One of the things that gets confused is the HSE upgrade that came in 02' some people get that confused with an engine upgrade, for some its because the Range Rover HSE came with a 4.6, but unfortunately at that time the disco did not.

We probally looked at close to 50 Disco's and P38's, a couple of Classic's too. So my brain got scrambled. 3.9, 4.2,4.0,4.6...their all the same engine so they all look the same therefore I'm not as big of a dope as I thought, right? [8D]

Yes there is a recall on the bad part. Check it out here:

Land Rover WILL take care of the problem since it was a national recall. Some have already been fixed so bring it by to check on that. You may find that it doesnt even effect your truck, but is good to know either way.

Currently fighting Land Rover over blown oil pump. I have a 03 Discovery, and my vin number is outside of the TSB vinnumbers, w/ only 36,000 miles. No problems until last week. Heard noise in engine and oil light came on. Oil Pump exploded, they showed me the gears in pieces, and blew a hole in the front panel. Probably need a new engine. Warranty just up about 10mos ago. I expect full coverage. My other car is a 97 Honda Civic which is still running beatiful. Never would have thought my 36K Land Rover would go first. Furthermore, I was planning on upgrading in the near future, but unsure now. good luck.
